THE SALINA JOURNAL SPORTS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1996 CB V HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Sylvan rallies to down Wilson Mustangs erase halftime deficit with run of 24 unanswered points By ARNE GREEN Tlie Salina Journal SYLVAN GROVE — The Sylvan Mustangs got the test they wanted and then some. After trailing unbeaten Wilson much of the game, the Mustangs scored three straight times in HIGH SCHOOL the fourth quarter Wilson 20 Friday night and -^ ^ pulled away for a 32-20 Twin Lakes League victory. Sylvan, ranked No. 1 in Eight- Man II, improved to 6-0 with a 3-0 league record while Wilson dropped to 5-1 and 5-1. The Dragons came in ranked No. 6 in Eight- Man I. "Our kids came back from some adversity, and I think that will help us in the end," said Sylvan coach Mike Weatherman, "We needed a game like that, "Hats off to Wilson. They came out here and played some football. They played a heck of a game. Those kids played hard." Sylvan, which trailed 14-8 at the half, tied the game on Clint Sylvan 32, Wilson 20 GAME IN STATS W S First downs 10 16 Rushes-yards 32-103 45-220 Passing yards 114 165 Comp-att-lnt 7-22-2 13-25-2 Total offense 54-217 70-385 Fumbles-losl 1-0 3-1 Penalties-yards 3-15 11-122 Punts-avg. 4-33.0 4-25.5 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING: Wilson: Soukup 11-50, Niehoff 11-36, Pasek 2-(-5), Mog 5-16, Petz 3-6. Meitler's touchdown pass to Darris Meitler with 3:16 left in the third quarter, then took the lead on the first play of the fourth period when Curtis Keller scored on a 5-yard run. Wilson, meanwhile, struggled offensively the whole second half before driving 45 yards for a score on its last possession. "They shut our offense down and got the momentum," Wilson coach Tony Brokes said. "You give them a little bit and they take a lot. They're a very explosive team." Darris Meitler had a big second half for Sylvan, scoring on a pair of inside reverse runs in the fourth quarter. The junior end ran 56 yards for a touchdown with 10:17 left to make it 26-14, then put the game out of reach with a 10- yarder at the 3:53 mark. "Darris ran the reverse well tonight," Weatherman said of Meitler, who rushed three times for 83 yards, caught nine passes for 97 yards and picked off a pass. "And John (Wiese) and Curtis (Keller) ran the power plays well. "I thought possibly in the second half our speed and line blocking took over. And I thought our defense picked up the tempo. I thought we put a lot of pressure on their passing game." Wilson had just 99 yards in the second half and finished with 217 yards total offense. Sylvan fin- ished with 385 yards total offense — 227 after the break. For Sylvan, Clint Meitler completed 12 of 23 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Wiese had 66 yards rushing and two receptions for 57 yards. Fullback Joe Soukup led Wilson with 50 yards on 11 carries but went out in the third quarter with possible cracked ribs. Quarterback Dusty Pasek completed seven of 21 passes for 114 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown strike to J.L. Kasper with 30 seconds left, and rushed 1 yard for a touchdown that gave the Dragons the halftime lead. Pasek's favorite receiver was David Miller, who caught four parses for 104 yards. Sylvan was slowed by penalties the whole game. The Mustangs were flagged 11 times for 122 yards while Wilson was penalized just three times for 15 yards. Wilson used one big play, plus a long drive just before halftime to lead at intermission. The Dragons scored first, with 1:20 left in the first quarter, on Brandon Niehoff's 5-yard run around left end. The score was set up by a 47-yard Pasek-to-Miller pass. The drive covered 52 yards in just two plays. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RESULTS CENTRE 54. AMORET, MO. 6 Amoret, Mo. 0 6 x x - 6 Centre (6-0) 22 32 x x - 54 Amoret - Shearer 45 Interception return. Wallace finished the night with 153 yards on 27 carries, while Nathan Schwab had 35 yards rushing and 52 receiving. The Mustangs were held to season lows on rushing yardage (197) and total offense (276), while attempting a season-high 18 passes and completing seven for 79 yards. "Manhattan controlled a lot of things by putting so many people between the tackles," Diener said. "It says a lot for them that they adjusted to the pass without taking alot of people away from the line of scrimmage." A critical Central miscue late in the second quarter gave Manhattan an opportunity to take the lead into halftime, The Indians trailed 14-13 and were punting the ball away, but the Mustangs fumbled the return and Manhattan recovered with 2:03 remaining in the half. Lane's club moved 33 yards in five plays, scoring on a third- down, 20-yard pass from Ben Oleen to a wide open Jason Nickel with 0:46 to play. J. White's two- point conversion run made it a 2114 Manhattan lead at the break, "It was a big play from a momentum standpoint, but I don't think it broke their backs," Lane said. The muffed punt was the only turnover of the first half as the two teams traded touchdowns through the early going. Manhattan scored first on a 15-yard Nash run, with Central responding on its next possession with a 13-yard scoring pass from John Huseman to Schwab, Manhattan again regained the lead, this time on an Oleen to Scott Voos 11-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Wallace carried on seven of Central's nine plays in its next drive and scored his 14th touchdown of the season on a 1-yard carry, Andy Schorn's second extra point kick made it a 14-13 Mustang lead. •^ LEGALS (First Published In The Salina Journal October 12,1886) IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF SALINE COUNTY, KANSAS IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE OF LESLIE F.
