CORPUS CHR1STI CALLER Sat Nov 23 A Frequent Visitor to South Texas: Lyndon Johnson In another visit later that year on Sept 19 Johnson stopped here after an extensive tour of damages caused by Hurricane Carla He said all levels of government were closing ranks and drawing all resources passible to provide immediate aid have seen suffering sorrow and destruction he said I have also seen a bold determination to recover and to return to a full and productive life" said Johnson During the visit he said he would be a candidate for re-election to the Senate in 1954 In 1937 Johnson addressed the South Texas Chamber of Commeree at a meeting here Oct 20-21 He discussed the state's water problems and steps being taken at the time to resolve them His address was given at Exposition Hall After the speech a legislative forum was held from 2 to 4 pm Johnson made a surprise visit to Corpus Christi on Dec 7 1958 in connection with an ex ecutive order to close the Naval Air Station's Overhaul and Repair shops At that time he pledged his help in the community's efforts to gel reconsideration of an order which called for the firing of 3200 employes here by July 1 1939 In 1959 Johnson again visited here On Nov 4 he addressed the Corpus Christi Junior Chamber of Commerce at the organization's Distinguished Service Award banquet At the event he presented County Judge Noah Kennedy with the Out standing Young Man of 1959 award That same day he spoke at Del Mar College and said the federal government should adopt a policy of taking in more money than it spent and to use the surplus to erase the national debt His address was part of a whirlwind two-day tour of the city and nearby towns during which he denied emphatically that he had any ambition to become President In I960 a cheering rooting crowd jam-packed the Corpus Christi International Airport on Nov 6 to greet Johnson on his 90-minute stop here while campaigning for vice president He was interrupted by cheers 79 times during his 40 minute speech in the packed terminal building On June 22 1961 he said that he and his delegation would return to Washington do our dead level best" to have Padre Island designated as a National Seashore Area A group of congressmen and officials were here to inspect the area The new President of the United States Lyndon Johnson visted Corpus Christi a city where he once lived several times when he was a US senator and later as vice president He made visits here in 19i3 1937 1958 1959 I960 and 1961 In 1933 the then Sen Johnson saw thousands of local residents when he spoke to student assemblies at Roy Miller and Ray High Schools That same day' Oct 1 he addressed a joint meeting of the Rotary Club and Uptown 1 a 1 '3' Lester (lunst longtime friend of Lyndon Johnson and Republican leader for many years is shown shaking hands with the visiting Johnson here Lyndon Johnson greets a friend and keeps an arm around US Rep John Young At left lie-aide Mrs Johnson is Cecil Burney long a Johnson supporter Lady Bird and Lyndon Johnson are pictured with a happy little girl who welcomed them to Corpus Christi in 1961 Johnson Is shown here with Fenner Roth classmate at Southwest Texas Slate Teachers College and an employe of the National Youth Administration when Johnson headed the Texas A typical friendly crowd greets Lyndon Johnson at International AirNiri during one of his visits here SAGB 10 JOBS WILL BE SOLD REGARDLESS OF PROFIT TKIE APPLIED OVER ANY TYPE OLD OR NEW FRAME STUCCO BLOCK BRICK etc HOME OR BUSINESS 31 ST YIARI PIRMA-STONI ml fti an4 Ink Veur Hama!
