Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy leave a party Thursday in New York. Kennedys invite uninvited NEW YORK — Publish this: John John and Carolyn had a glamorous party for those who weren't invited to their very hush-hush wedding. And the press dined on cold shoulder. John F. Kennedy Jr. and his new bride, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, arrived separately Thursday night — he on a mountain bike, she by taxi a few minutes later. Inside the Park AVenue home of John's sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, the guests included Julia Roberts, Sen. Ted Kennedy and his wife, Victoria Reggie; William Kennedy Smith; his mother, Jean; Pat Kennedy Lawford; and Ethel Kennedy. The couple were married on the sly Sept. 21 on a Georgia island, thwarting the press. Firing doesn't stop Elders MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You can take the woman out of the country, but don't expect her to leave the straight talk behind. "When you're poor people, you don't have time to beat around the bush," former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders said. Elders autographed copies of her recent autobiography, "Joycelyn Elders, M.D." Thursday at the 20th Book and Author Dinner at The Racquet Club of Memphis. From Wire Service Reports Wrapping blind date in cellophane not a bad idea Dear Ann Landers: Ever since I read those "how we met" letters in your column, I have been flirting with the idea of sending you mine. Here it $ is: Have you ever heard of a man being wrapped in cellophane, tied with a big red ribbon and presented to a girl he had never met? That is how I met my wife, Joan, 46 years ago. I had seen Joan at the bank where I worked. She had come in with one of the bank directors. When I asked the director, "Who is that pretty young " woman who walked into the bank with you yesterday?" he said, "That's Joan, my youngest daughter." A few days later, he called and asked if I would like to be Joan's blind date at her 21st birthday par- ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. ty. Apparently when he asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she had told him, "I would really like a decent date." Lo and behold, I was "gift-wrapped" and presented to Joan as a surprise. We just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary and couldn't be happier. — John in Maitland, Fla. Dear John: What a sweet story. And different, too. Generally, young people don't want to be fixed up by their parents because parents are "too square." Your in-laws certainly proved otherwise. Hooray for love! Dear Ann Landers: Nine years ago, after nearly 40 years of drinking, I found my way to Alcoholics Anonymous. There, for the first time in my memory, I began to feel good about myself and enjoy being part of God's wonderful world. Lucky for me, I found AA before I lost everything. Others have not been so fortunate. At one AA meeting, someone gave me a TV TONIGHT poem about why alcoholics drink. Now that I am clean and sober, I have revised that poem to list some of the reasons why I drank. Perhaps some of your readers will see themselves in what I have written and be motivated to seek help while there is still time. Keep telling them, Ann. Alcohol is poison. — Federal Way, Wash. Why I Drank I drank to be witty — and I became a boor. I drank to relax — and I couldn't stop my hands from shaking. I drank to feel good — and I suffered through sickening hangovers. I drank to be happy — and it made me depressed. I drank to be a good dancer — and it made me stagger. I drank to be a good conversationalist — and I couldn't pronounce my words. I drank to be sociable — and I became angry and resentful. I drank to help my appetite — and cheated my body of nutrition by not eating right. I drank to be a good lover — and I couldn't perform. I drank to show I was a man — and became a slobbering, bawling baby. I drank to be popular — and lost my friends. I drank to enjoy life — and contemplated suicide. I drank for camaraderie — and drove everyone away from me. I drank to escape — and built a prison for myself. I drank to find peace — and I found hell. Dear F.W.: Iliope my readers who suspect that they may have a drinking problem will read what you have written — twice. It'could help them decide and perhaps do something about it — like look up Alcoholics Anonymous in the phone book and ask, "When and where is the next meeting?" pest bets « • Beginning at 3:15 p.m. — ''Major League Baseball Playoffs," National League Championship Series Game 4 on Fox (Salina cable channels 4 & 7), Atlanta at •St. Louis, 3:15 p.m.; American League Championship Series JSame 4 on NBC (Salina cable Channels 3 & 13), New York at {Baltimore, 6:30 p.m. J »'B p.m. — "Early Edition," CBS, Salina cable channels 5 & 12.
