(AP) Dan Gurney finished second in the Indianapolis 500 for the second year in a row but the veteran driver-builder from Santa Ana, was glad to get it. Gurney nursed a sick Ford stock -block engine through the last 55 miles of the race Friday, fighting off a strong challenge from 1968 winner Bobby Unser who came in third.

"I'm not sure what was wrong," Gurney said after the race. A tense pit crew gave Gurney the "easy" sign until Unser drew within 12 seconds of his Eagle car with less than 25 miles to go. Unser, fighting off a challenge from Mel Kenyon for third place, tightened the gap to less than six seconds by the finish. One of the first to con-gratulate Gurney was Eagle teammate Denis Hulme of New Zealand, who went out on the 149th lap when the master cy Atlanta 28 13 .651 x-L. Beside him, he has a box of his books, which he was tossing around like a guy throwing jelly beans out of a car. In 1967, his pdace in automotive history was secure when he came with his turbine, a tubby car with a silhouette like Andy's, whom it only outweighed by a couple of pounds. "Is it legal?" Andy demanded. "We don't know Andy. First of all, what is it?" they asked.

One steward stratched his head and said, "All I know is, the first time I hear it growl or start eating grass, OUT it goes!" "It was the safest, quietest, most advanced car ever to hit the Speedway. They wouldn't be burning up all those guys out there if they didn't illegalize it!" shouted Andy the other night, pressing books on bewildered passers by. "Kerosene is the cheapest, safest fuel in the world. You can't even light it. You'd have better luck lighting water.

Turbine cars are here if these idiots don't ban them. So what do we do now. Go back to testing the rearview mirrors? I innovate, don't 1, buddy? Look, they don't even give you head rests in these cars. They give you a head rest even in barbershops, don't they?" And your head doesn't snap back from hitting a wall in barbershops, does it?" The cow on his plate was finally dead, and you expected the mules to come along and drag the remains away, but Andy speared a last portion he caught wriggling and pointed it and his fork at me. "The turbine is here! The steam car is here! At Indy, they never got over regretting the Duesenberg is gone." The race kind of bored Andy this year.

He's had cars in the front row, fourth row, and 10th row, but, shucks! They had four wheels and they didn't run on steam or dry ice or perfume. They ran on top of the ground. You can hear them coming. They're hard to love. If they were girls, they'd have glasses and buckteeth and a pencil in their hair.

"I want to go in Victory Lane with a car that uses a thimbleful of water a year!" glows Andy, who is as emotional as a Caruso aria. "We'll clean up all the cities in America! Andy Granatelli at Indianapolis will wipe out smog!" The 29-year-old Andretti hugged his expectant wife Dee Ann, and got a ulations from another Italian-born American, John A. Volpe, secretary of transportation in the Nixon cabnet. Volpe, looking at his countryman, said, "It sure is nice." Andretti said he was in trouble twice in the Memorial Day classic once at the very start when his radiator began boiling, then later when hs went into a sideways slide on a back stretch turn while far into the lead with only 125 miles left in the race. "I GOT CAUGHT napping," Anretti said. But he pulled out of the skid without trouble.

Heat gave Andretti his most persistent problem. He charged past pole-sitter A. J. Foyt Jr. to seize the lead on the first turn of the first lap, but had to drop back after 15 miles.

"The water temperature went right up to 225 degrees," Andretti said. "i had to slow to cool it a bit. I figured that was it right there." Andretti blamed the overheating on the official ruling, which forbade a change in his car to install a new water cooler after qualifications and which prompted him to threaten to quit in the squabble at midweek. The driver nursed his car through the first 250 miles, staying close to the leaders until one by one they dropped out. AT THE HALFWAY mark Lloyd Ruby, holding a slim lead over Andretti, pulled into the pits and never came out, Andretti said, "When Ruby dropped out 1 had things pretty easy for me.

It was a great relief." Andretti, now of Nazareth, became the third European driver to win the 500 in the past five years. He came to the United States when he was 15. Andretti finished third in his rookie race in Indianapolis in 1965 and set speed records in qualifying first the next two years, but was plagued with mechanical trouble until winning Friday. "This has got to be the greatest thing," he said. "I don't know why.

But it is." Dee Ann Andretti almost forgot she was expecting her third child when hubby Mario crossed the finish line first at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Friday. She was so excited, she pushed herself through the crowd in the boiling sun to rush to her husband. She's Vi months pregnant.

Mrs. Andretti, didn't say very much during the race as she gripped the green rail below her seat and nibbled the wax off her soft drink cup while her husband was winning the Indianapolis 500, a race he has managed to finish only once in his four other starts. When the black and white checked flag came down and the 200 laps were over for Mario and his cherry red STP Hawk-Ford, Dee Ann Andretti said, "I think I'm going to faint." Instead, she fell into the arms of a friend and the tears spilled from her brown eyes for the second time in two days. "MARIO HOLLERED at me last night and I cried," she said.
