THE SALINA JOURNAL CLASSIFIED SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2001! CI CAREERS & 2 0 0 Siilhiu Jour mil Job hunting? Here are some tips to put you on the right path Carla Scassellati-Strand Journal Advertising Writer Looking for a job? While jobs have been plentiful the past few years, there are still certain procedures most people must foUow starting a new job. Though sldlls and training and knowing the boss may get your application placed at the top of the heap, most people must still go through an interview. Linda Talbott, Schools To Career coordinator for Smoky Hill Education Service Center, 605 E. Crawford, said searching for a job can take a long time if you don't prepare before showing up for the interview. "It is important to remember that the purpose of the interview is to determine whether yoiu- qualifications and personality fit the job and organization," she said. The quality of the interview can easUy be the difference between getting a job offer or a "sony, but..." letter. "You must show tiie interviewer in person you are as impressive as your qualifications state on yom- application or resume, and that you are the best person for the job," she said. Interviews can also give you an idea if you will fit into a particular job situ ation. "Interviews usually reveal whetiier you and interviewer can get along and whether you fit into a workplace," she said. Applicants should remember that the interviewer would do most of the talking during the actual interview, she said. Some of the things that they may talk about include a description of the company and the job opening, t Talbott also recommends that before an in terview, applicants should be prepared to answer questions about their background and interests. Again, preparations before the day of the interview can mal<e a difference. Looking for an edge on the competition? Talbott has some tips for preparing for an interview: 1. Organize your clotiiing tiie night before. 2. Visualize a positive attitude. 3. Be punctual. Arrive 15 minutes early to do things such as check appearance or adopt a positive mind set. 4. Bring a notebook to jot down questions, points or assignments. 5. Prepare answers to broad questions about yom-self. 6. Prepare and take a list of questions to ask the interviewer. 7. Practice intervievmg with family and friends. 8. Call interviewer if you can make the appointment. Apologize and ask to reschedule. 9. Take several copies of your resimie (if applicable). 10. Learn all you can about the organization or at least know something about the company. Want to do even more before the day of the interview? Talbott has more tips to help prepare for an interview. Gather this information days or hours before your appointment. 1.1 have an accurate and interesting resume free of errors. 2. I sent a cover letter along with my re- smne. 3.1 confirmed my interview date, time and location.
