Contractors, architects, and the entire real estate and construction industry will participate.

This conference will be a part of the nationwide program of mutual cooperation designed to provide not only up-to-date small cost homes for, the moderate income groups but, by working together, to create a better understanding and arrive at a practical solution of the problem of overcoming cur housing shortage. These related industries are now being coordinated under the guidance of the Federal Housing Ad Thor Out-Board Motor avenue of commerce. It was the worst place between Willmar and St. Cloud. Because of the severity of the drifts at this spot this place was selected for a test of the principle of preventing the snow from drifting thru the use of a hedge of shrubbery planted some distance from-the road.

This is the first hedge planted In the state of Minnesota for the express purpose of preventing snow from drifting onto the highway. If it proves successful and practical, it is expected that the use of such hedges will become widespread for the hedge is useful in other ways such as beautification of roadsides and furnishing a habitat for wild life. Mr. Bork volunteered the use of his land for this experiment. Practical contractors will tell just what they have been able to accomplish under existing conditions In building a small cost house that those of moderate incomes are in position to buy and eventually acquire, debt-free, as their very own.

Urge Small Homes Warning that the failure of the building industry to construct enough small, inexpensive houses to supply the demand, will result In "overbuying" and its accompanying evil, the federal housing administration has reaffirmed its endorsement of the small house demonstration program which is now being carried on by various elements of the building industry. Administration officials have pointed out that there is danger in the concentration on the construction of the more expensive type of houses, failing to build a sufficient number of sma'l dwelling units. Continuance of a policy may result cither in overbuying or the postponement of home purchase by thousands of families who are now desirous of owning homes. One of the reasons of the seriousness of the real estate crash of 1933 was the overproduction of in bringing to the attention of industry through its small house and subdivision conferences. The specific objective which the lumber and concrete, brick manufacturers and real estate and lending concerns have in mind in undertaking to build thousands of small homes this year, is to supply this market.

The national housing act has provided the means for adapting the principal of installment selling to the building and allied industries. Through such publications of the technical division as technic bulletin 4, "Principles of Planning Small Houses" it has pointed the way for industry to attack this neglected market for small houses. For those who are thinking seriously about small home construction this year, there are a number of points to be taken into consideration. It cannot be repeated too many times that a small house is not a bijj house cut down. It is a house planned and designed to encompass the maximum efficiency and livability of the structure within the reach of the moderate income family.

It must not be thought, however, that economy is obtained by the use of inferior materials. Vast improvements have been made in heme building materials, methods and "Don't forg et, John. The reason that an elfcrt is now being made, by means tf the 1937 small house program to interest the building industry to give special attention to building houses costing less than $5,000, is due to the faci that in the past cur residential activities have been directed to building homes costing $5,000 or more.
