The Salina Journal Saturday, January 25,1986 Page 16 Shockers stay I-A, announce grid sked WICHITA - Wichita State, competing as an independent because of the dissolution of football competition within the Missouri Valley Conference, will have five home football games during the 1986 season, Shocker athletic director Lew Perkins announced Friday. Wichita State will open the '86 campaign at home Sept. 6 against San Francisco State. A tough road schedule awaits the Shockers, including dates at Iowa State, Florida State, Tulsa and Arizona State. "We're beginning to move forward with our football scheduling now that we are out of the Missouri Valley Conference," Perkins said. "We'll be playing more Division I-A schools and woking hard to bring, in the future, more quality Division I-A opponents to Wichita." The 1986 WSU schedule includes seven games against I-A opponents. Last season was the last for football competition in the Mis- souri Valley. WSU and Tulsa were the only I-A teams in the seven- team league. WSU 'officials said Friday the Shockers have maintained their IA static through the 1989 season, meeting the required average attendance of 17,000 paid admissions over the past four seasons. Also Friday, it was announced that assistant football coach Wayne Donner has resigned. Donner had been at WSU for two years, serving as defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. Fayne Henson, who has coached the running backs the past two years, will take over as defensive coordinator. He has been at WSU four years. 1986 Shocker Football Schedule Sept. 6 — Son Francisco State. Sept. 13 — At Toledo. Sept. 20 — Moreheod State. Sept. 27 — At Iowa State. Oct. 4 — At Tulane.
