THE SUN, Wednesday, February 14, 1979 Division II delays bids for tourney until Tuesday The University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Morgan State University and possibly Mount St. Mary's College and Loyola College will have to wait until Tuesday to learn if they will be selected for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I1 Eastern Regional basketball tournament. UMBC and Morgan, both ranked nationally among Division II schools, had hoped to get bids to the Eastern Regionals yesterday, and it was believed that UMBC would be selected as the host school for the March 2-3 tournament.

"No selections were made, and no sites were chosen in any of the eight regions," a source from the selection committee said yesterday. "The telephone conference call was utter chaos. "In every region, there are four or five schools or more which are very close, with no one team that much better than several others. The tournament selection committee decided to make no selections this week, but will withhold making any decision on teams and sites until next Tuesday." UMBC is still the likely site for the Southern Regionals, with UMBC, Morgan and Roanoke College as the front runners for three of the four berths in the tournamenthe New England Regional will probably be held at either Bentley College or the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Bridgeport (19-4) is at Bentley (17-4) Saturday, and the winner will probably be the host school.

Other teams in the running for the New England Regionals are Quinnipiac (16-5), New Haven (14-7), Sacred Heart (13-8), Bryant (13-7), Stone Hill (10-8) and Assumption (12-9). Philadelphia Textile (16-4) will probably be the host school for the Eastern Regionals, with Hartwick (17-3), Gannon (17- 6), Adelphi (14-7) and Cheyney State (14- 8), the defending national Division II champion, in the running for bids. Mounts' game with UMBC is crucial one tonight Mount St. Mary's College and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, backed by recent winning streaks, collide at Emmitsburg in the feature game on tonight's area college basketball program. The Mounts had a four-game string halted at George Mason University Saturday night, then bounced back to whip the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Monday night.

UMBC saw a school-record seven-game victory streak snapped at Monmouth College Saturday night. With the National Collegiate Athletic Association withholding bids to the Division II championships, tonight's game becomes a crucial one for both teams. UMBC, 16-6 and practically assured of hosting and playing in the South Atlantic Regional, could enhance its position with a victory. The Mounts are 15-7, and with games at Division I Catholic University and at Division II power Philadelphia Textile ahead, cannot afford a loss. Mount St.

Mary's is 6-1 at home this season, losing only to George Mason in overtime in early December. A capacity crowd is expected for the 8 o'clock contest, as the word gets around that this is more than just another home game.
