The results handily beat Wall Street expectations. Boeing earned $1.24 billion, or $1.45 per share, in the January-March period compared with $418 million, or 48 cents a share, last year. The latest results included a one-time tax benefit of $475 million. Without the tax benefit, Boeing earned $762 million, or 89 cents per share, in the quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call were expecting earnings of 80 cents per share excluding the tax benefit. Shares in Boeing were up by 5 percent in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange but fell back later in the day Shares were up 95 cents at $61.58 in afternoon trading. First-quarter revenues were $13.3 billion, up from $9.9 billion a year ago when Boeing was hurt by an engineers and technicians strike. In a conference call with media and analysts, Boeing chief financial officer Mike Sears said the strike made last year's performance especially weak. "After last year's first-quarter work stoppage, we did have some catch-up to do," he said. He said the tax benefit, which came from a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service based on earnings from the late 1980s and early 1990s, also gave earnings an unusual one-time lift. In core operations, Boeing benefited from strong sales, especially in commercial airplanes. Total commercial airplane revenue was $8.4 billion, up 63 percent from the same period last year. The company BRIEFLY delivered 122 jets during the ! period, compared with 75 in the same quarter a year ago. Excluding the tax benefit, net earnings for commercial airplanes were $195 million, iip from $103 million in the same period last year "We are off to a great start for 2001," Boeing chairman and chief executive Phil Condit said. Paul Nisbet, an analyst with JSA Research in Providentie, R.I., said the company was able to benefit even in an econoipic slowdown because of its backlog of airplane orders, which number around 1,600. He agreed with Sears' prediction that the company will continue strong performance", delivering an average of 530 aircraft each year in 2001 and 2002. "Unless the economy gets a lot worse ... they'll make those deliveries this year and next," Nisbet said. Condit would not comment on whether tensions between the United States and China would impact Boeing's business in China this fiscal year Poor profit report leads to layoffs MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Honeywell International., a manufacturer of everything from jet engines to home thermostats, is eliminating 6,500 jobs after reporting a 92 percent drop in first-quarter profits. The cuts, announced Friday will be spread across Honey well's businesses around the world and represent about 5 percent of its global work force. Most of the cutbacks will be achieved through layoffs. Europe could be next for tech wreck FRANKFURT, Germany — After savaging American bellwethers Cisco, Hewlett- MARKETS Packard and Intel, market forces are now taking aim at Europe, as the continent's high-tech sector cracks under the pressure of plunging profits and wilting demand. Europe now appears on a • collision course with an unfolding global tech wreck. And the spreading gloom is sapping confidence in a regional economy.
