THE SUN, Sunday, July 9, 1978 C13 George Scott criticizes All-Star voting plan Cleveland (API-Boston's George Scott is not fuming because he was not voted in as a starter for Tuesday's All-Star baseball game. However, the Red Sox first baseman is quite frank In bis criticism of the selection process. "The All-Star balloting stinks," Scott aid during the Red Sox three-game series here with the Indians. "I can understand trying to let the fans have a hand in the voting, but it always turns out that a lot of guys who deserve to go to the game don't make It. makes the All-Star team doesn't deserve it," he said.

But All-Star or not, Scott the winner of eight Gold Glove awards during a 13-year career with the Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers-Is proud of his defensive accomplishments. Known throughout his career as a slugger who often hits towering borne runs, Scott earlier this season discussed his defensive game. "There were a lot of guys I admired when I was coming up Willie Mays, team-mate) Fred Lynn. He's batting .320, he's got about 11 or 12 home runs, he's a good defensive player and be might not even make the squad," Scott continued, Lynn was chosen by manager Billy Martin as a reserve. "The American League's going to start two left fielders and a right fielder.

Who's going to play center?" Scott said he Is not upset that Minnesota's Rod Carew beat him out for the start-ing position at first base. "1 don't want to give the lmpresslou that everyone who BS-rtp Vti6 SALE ENDS 1 fB SATURDAY Royals thrash Orioles by 1 J-3 NOBODY SELLS FOR LESS! I developed my own style and never tried to pattern myself after anyone else." Scott was signed to a minor league contract as a shortstop and made it to the majors In 1968 as third baseman.

He divided his playing time between first and third base for five seasons, before moving to first full time In 1971. "Playing shortstop helped me develop the range you need to be a good fielder. My arm too," said Scott. "Those two things are probably what separate me from the average first baseman." Boston manager Don Zimmer went a step further, saying that what distinguishes Scott most is that he Is a genuine first baseman. "Most first basemen are not playing their natural position," said Zimmer.

"U-sually they're pretty good bitters, but there's another reason they're there they have too many weaknesses somewhere else. "George doesn't fit in that category. Everybody can catch, but it helps when you've got somebody at the position who knows how to (Jay It," Zimmer said. Scott missed winning a Gold Glove last season for the first time since 1970. While handling 1,585 total chances in 1977, Scott committed a career-high 24 errors, tops in the American League.

"Errors do affect you. they didn't you wouldn't be human and if you said tbey didn't affect you, you'd probably be lying," said Scott. That leaves Palmer as the likely choice. The American League used to have a rule which prohibited the use of All-Star pitchers on the Sunday before the game.

However, after losing six straight times to the National League, the AL decided to drop the rule.
