The Salina Journal Friday, January 24,1986 Page 17 Walton thrives in new surroundings BOSTON (AP) - At 33, the big redhead still is a free spirit, a rock concert fan, a beach bum with nowhere to go, a kid at heart. Bill Walton also is having a ball in new surroundings with the Boston Celtics in his 12th year of an injury- plagued career in the National Basketball Association. "I'm not used to freezing to death in zero temperatures, but I wouldn't trade being in Boston for 10 years worth of California sunshine," says the former UCLA All-American. Acquired in September from the Los Angeles Clippers for veteran Cedric Maxwell, a No. 1 draft pick and cash, Walton is thriving in a limited-action role as a backup for center Robert Parish and forward Kevin McHale. "He loves the competition, that's when he's having the most fun," says Boston coach K.C. Jones. "If you're playing LA or Philly, that's Bill's game." After helping the Celtics overcome a 23-point deficit for an overtime victory at Atlanta in what he called "one of the greatest comebacks I've ever been involved in," last Saturday, Walton began looking ahead — to the Los Angeles Lakers. And, in Boston's first meeting with Los Angeles since being dethroned by the Lakers as NBA champions last June, Walton was ready Wednesday night. He was pumped up even more when he saw Bill Russell, who revolutionized pro basketball as a defensive genius with the Celtics, at a mike as a TV analyst. "These are the games you really get up for," Walton said. "These games are special. And I get fired up every time I see Bill Russell." Walton was a dynamic force as the Celtics handed the Lakers their worst defeat of the season, 110-95. The 6- foot-11 veteran scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked seven shots and had one steal in only 16 minutes of play. "Great players get up for big games and that's exactly what Bill did," Parish said. "He's been talking about beating LA since the start of practice Monday. "He's very enthusiastic and that's really something for a man who has been around as long as he has. It goes to show how much he still enjoys the game." "I'm having the time of my life," Walton said. "I feel good, and playing about 20 minutes a game is good for my timing. And I'm not worrying about my foot or other old injuries. I'm able to concentrate on basketball. "I wasn't out there to send a message to LA. I just wanted to win. But I get worked up for these types of games. Of course, I love playing against these guys. I'm from southern California, so it makes it even more fun to show the people back home that I still can play." "I think there's a lot he wants to prove," said the Lakers' James Worthy. "He knows that one of the reasons the Celtics wanted him was to go against us. And with Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar) out there, it didn't take much to get Bill up for this game." Abdul-Jabbar, the leading scorer in NBA history, had one of his worst games against the Celtics. His pat- Bill Walton puts up a shot over Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during Wednesday's Celtics-Lakers showdown. ented sky hook deserted him, and he hit only 6 of 20 floor shots, finishing with 17 points. Walton, who has missed only one game, because of extensive dental work, this season, shrugged off his performance, saying, "It was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time." "When you're playing with great players, it gives you a lot of confidence," he said. "You know if you do your job, they'll do theirs. All of our guys were super. Give them credit. They played the most minutes and did the real job." Alleged remark gets McMahon in trouble NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Having already argued with his own team over acupuncture, played Pied Piper on Bourbon Street and mooned a helicopter, Jim McMahon found himself in trouble Thursday for something he didn't do — insult New Orleans women. For once, at least, he apparently was an innocent victim. In a fitting coda to the week before Sunday's Super Bowl between the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots became McMahon, the irreverent Chicago quarterback was the subject of a broadcast report — later retracted — quoting him as calling New Orleans women "sluts." But the retraction didn't halt an anti-McMahon demonstration outside the Bears' hotel, bomb threats to his hotel switchboard and some threatening calls that got through to McMahon's room. Had it been the only incident involving McMahon, it would have been sensation enough in Super Bowl McMahon a sideshow to week, which is normally no more than a series of staged media events. But it came following three days in which McMahon, whose rebellious personality had already made him a lightning rod for attention: • Upbraided his team's management for refusing to allow an acupuncturist to fly here to treat his bruised buttocks. The Bears relented, the acupuncturist flew in Wednesday, and McMahon said Thursday he felt 100 percent better after three treatments. • Mooned a helicopter flying over the team's practice field in suburban Metairie. "I just wanted to show them where it hurts," he said. • Got into an altercation with a photographer who tried to snap his picture at a restaurant. "When I'm on my own time, I don't want people shoving cameras in my face," he said. "You people may think I'm crazy," he said at one point. "I think I'm normal because I don't give a damn." The latest incident was set off at the end of the 10 p.m. newscast Wednesday on WDSU-TV by the station's sportscaster, Buddy Diliberto. "Jim McMahon apparently, on a U McMahon's alleged remark draws protesters. radio interview with WLS, the Chicago radio station, really ripped New Orleans," Diliberto said. "He ripped the people, he ripped the ladies, he ripped a lot of things. "Basically, I understand, he said most of the ladies he ran into were sluts. He said most of the people he ran into were stupid. And things like that. And they said he really took off." On Thursday, McMahon denied saying that; WLS said it had not interviewed McMahon this week, and both Diliberto and Bob McRaney, the station's vice president and general manager, publicly apologized. "I sincerely apologize for the problems caused by these unverified statements," Diliberto said on the air. "I wish Jim McMahon and the Bears well in the Super Bowl Sunday and hope the remainder of the week is devoted to preparations for the game without distractions caused by my comments last night." WDSU announced later Thursday that Diliberto had been suspended. Meanwhile, two dozen women, surrounded by roughly four times as many reporters, picketed outside the Hilton Hotel, where the Bears were staying. McMahon, who was partying just off Bourbon Street at the time of Dilberto's broadcast, said he heard about it when he woke up in the morning. "There was a message from a lady saying, 'Who in the hell do you think you are calling the women in New Orleans sluts?'" McMahon said.
