Nine lettermen headline the 77-78 unit which includes a couple more state placers. Senior Randy Eihausen placed in the consolation finals of the 200-and 500-yard freestyle events at state and junior Mike Hoffman took llth in the 100-yard backstroke and was one part of thw 200-yard medley relay team that took eighth at state. Eihausen and fellow senior Wade Eartlett made up half of the 400-yard free relay team which took fifth.

These three, Eihausen, Bartlett and Hoffman, are joined in the lettermen corps by three other seniors Mark Peterson, Chris Lovci and Gary Van Dyke, juniors Randy Van Dyke and Mark Weber and sophomore Jeff Adkisson. "We have one good entry in every event," Johnson said, but little depth after that on his 25-member squad which includes just seven freshmen. "We have one good sprinter and one good diver, a couple of flyers, three or four or mavbe five who could win in the 100 free, two or three in the 500 and three in the back but no breast stroker who can win yet and we can't win bath relays." Bartlett, who has been elected team captain, has been working hard in prac- tices and will get the call in a variety of events, the freestyles, individual medley, butterfly and back stroke. Eihausen has continued working out despite an injured elbow and will have to be Harsh's replacement in the sprints. Lovci is a question mark for the team, Johnson says.

"He's going to have to learn how to swim his best. He has looked good in the 100 free." Hoffman has finished his fastest 200 free already in workouts but Johnson was concerned in early practices if he would be in shape for the season opener. Peterson probably won't be in the best of shape since he has been on vacation and missed several workouts. Randy Van Dyke is also out of shape, Johnson said, but should be able to help out after Christmas. Gary Van Dyke is the best breaststroker on the team but he has been contending with a shoulder injury.

Adkisson is the leading diver on the team and can also back stroke and free style. Johnson said Adkisson can do the job this year but "he's not showing the enthusiasm he had as a fresh- man he needs to motivate himself." Weber will be able to help out if he stays healthy, a problem which has plagued him in the past. Three other seniors are on the team, frcestylcr and flyer Kevin Carnes, backstroker Allan Gray and breaststroker Cal Dixon. Johnson is hoping for underclassmen help from sophomores Craig Jones, a diver, and Ken Van Dyke, a freestyler. The best freshman prospect is breaststroker Jeff Lowry.

Johnson says his team doesn't feel the pressure of an undefeated season this time around. The '76-77 team finished with a 13-0 mark, which will automatically place the Discoverers in a conference favorite role in the Big Ten Conference. "I hope we're in the running in both conferences but we can't be picked as a favorite," Johnson said. "Grand Island, Fremont, Hastings and Columbus should all be tough in the Big This will be the first year for competition in the Trans- Nebraska Conference, which means the schedule has been greatly toughened.
