95 cents per minute. Dial 4 for Life Pete Pete kicks off season with tale that won't disappoint True crime story stars NBC show Gannett News Service By FAYE B. ZUCKERMAN New York Times Special Features Dave Davis nearly pulled off the Ai "Jl 2 ikrU i What manner of cruel, uncaring parents would even think of naming both of their red-haired sons Pete? Well, Mom does have that metal plate in her head though it is a great device for picking up stray radio signals. Dad owns a driving range, so he may have been too busy shagging golf balls to notice the faux pas. And the littlest Pete has a tattoo on his arm a mermaid named Petunia which makes the two siblings easier to tell apart.

It's all part of the wondrously wacky reality in "The Adventures of Pete and Pete," the twisted kid comedy that has slowly blossomed into a modest cult-TV favorite, one of the most popular original series on the Nickelodeon cable network. Launching its second season at 8:30 tonight with 13 new episodes, "Pete Pete" is part of Nickelodeon's prime-time programming block dubbed SNICK. Imagine "The Wonder Years" with "Calvin and Hobbes" as its stars and "Twin Peaks" as its locale, and you might come close to capturing the ambience of "Pete St Pete." Combining alternative rock music, the quirky stream-of -consciousness narrative of urban folk tales told by rambling juveniles, and the considerable talents of young co-stars Michael Maronna (Big Pete) and Danny Tamberelli (Little Pete), the series has perfected the teen-viewer formula that bombed on such recent network efforts as NBC's "Eerie, Indiana" and Fox's "Great But why are both the show's namesakes aka the Wrigley brothers christened Pete? "We're glad you asked that question," says Will McRobb, who created "Pete and Pete" and serves as its writer and executive producer in partnership with Chris Viscardi. "We're happy to tell you that there's no answer, because one of the big things about the show is that there ABC today at 3:30: Are you craving the boys of summer? You can catch the little boys of summer as Little League's top teams meet for the 48th showdown live in Williamsport, Pa. "U.S.

Gymnastics Championships," NBC tonight at 8 and Sunday at 7: Nashville is the setting for this year's gymnastics competition. Shannon Miller, who wowed America at the '92 Olympics in Spain, and newcomers Larissa Fontaine, Dominique Dawes and Amanda Borden are expected to turn in impressive routines. As for the men, keep an eye on John Roethlisberger, who is hoping to win yet another national championship. "Little Monsters" (1989), ABC tonight at 8: Fred Savage Wonder and his brother Ben Meets play guess what? siblings. The imaginary monsters that every child believes is under his or her bed actually come alive for the character Fred plays.

Howie Mandel appears as the most menacing monster of them all. Repeat. "Bob Hope's Young Comedians Making America Laugh," NBC tonight at 10: Veteran funnyman Hope teams up with Crystal Bernard and Dave Thomas to showcase up-and-coming strait-laced comics. These newcomers offer only sanitized jokes the kind censors dream about Viewers may get tired of the barrel of benign laughs. "Saturday Night Live," NBC tonight at 11:30: If you missed it the first time around, here's your chance to catch Nancy Kerrigan as host.

Aretha Franklin is the musical guest. Kerrigan doesn't glide into comedy easily, her performance gets about a 5.0. "The Corpse had a Familiar Face" (1994), CBS Sunday at 9: Miami's infamous Pulitzer-winning crime reporter Edna Buchanan is portrayed delightfully by Elizabeth Montgomery The movie shows how Buchanan perfect murder. He foiled investigators for 10 years as he hid safely 10,000 miles from the scene of the crime. Fortunately NBC created "Unsolved Mysteries." The series highlighted Davis' case and eventually tracked Davis, via electronic sources.

The story of how "Mysteries" did this became a TV movie, "Victim of Love: The Shannon Mohr Story," (1993), which is repeated Sunday at 9. It all may seem gratuitous and self-promotional. And it is nervy of NBC to make a movie about how one of its own shows helped apprehend a killer. The proof, as they say, is in the execution: This is a compelling, character-driven tale that demonstrates dogged detective work. It does not go out of its way to glorify "Mysteries," which comes into play only briefly in the movie's final scenes.

Dwight Schultz plays Davis, a classic sociopath who romances Mohr (Sally Murphy) for the sole purpose of killing her and collecting on several life-insurance policies. Schultz turns in a chilling portrayal of the deadly charmer, a pathological liar now serving a life prison sentence. Bonnie Bartlett and Andy Romano shine as Shannon's parents who, suspecting that their daughter's death was no accident, fight a relentless battle to see that justice is served. "Victim of Love" rises above sationalism by showing the human devastation of violent crime. The Mohrs' personal triumph is inspiring.

As always, they are delightfully witty and insightful beyond their years when young Pete (Danny Tam-berelli) ends up grounded because of a home experiment gone awry. "The Secret Garden" (1993) HBO Sunday at 8: Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 coming-of-age tale is given a respectable adaptation. There's a groundbreaking saturation of alternative rock within the show that has seen "Pete Pete" profiled in such magazines, as Billboard and Rolling Stone. Sometimes, the series seems to take on the appearance of a half-hour music video with cockeyed comedy. In addition, the show's unconventional list of guest stars has included R.E.M's Michael Stipe (as a brooding, nihilistic ice-cream man), the B-52's Kate Pierson, Marshall Crenshaw, Frank Gifford, Bebe Neuwirth and Deborah Harry. are various mysteries of childhood in it that will remain unexplained. There are rumors, and there's some speculation, but no one knows the real answer." In a 1993 interview, however, McRobb speculated that the boys were branded Pete and Pete because "their mother always wanted children with names that rhymed." In Saturday's season opener, "Grounded for Life," Little Pete's decision to see what happens when a humidifier and a dehumidifier are turned on at the same instant results in a blast that threatens to keep him.
