WILLIS Courier-News Staff Writer' FLEMINGTON Hunterdonr County's freeholders gave into Tewksbury residents' request Mon-, day night that both sides keep talking about the county's embattled plan to improve Route 517. The county's engineers will meet" with the mayor and some residents "to see what common ground can be found, to see what alternatives could 1 be made" to Hunterdon's plans, holder Director Paffl Sauerland said. But Freeholder Frank Fuzo saioj the future meeting does not put the $2.8 million project on hold. "I don't see what further compromise can bftn made," he said. The three freeholders said they support the project as is.

Route 517 is narrow and with several hidden intersections. Hunterdon officials say the road is a high accident area, including some fatalities. There were 61 accidents -along Route 517 last year, 55 in 1992 The county wants to realign Route 517 at four intersections Laurel -Mountain Way, Saw Mill Road, Far mersville Road and Fox Hill RoadJ Work includes modifying curves and-reducing the crests at some of the'; intersections. Workers also would" widen the intersections to add accel-1 eration and deceleration lanes. But residents who have orga-ii nized into a group called the Commit--tee to Save Old Turnpike Road contend the improvement project will increase the amount and speed of! the traffic on the road.

Some people have called for a re-? duction of the 45 mph speed limit. They support the township's proposal' to move houses on the west side of Farmersville and remove a rock outcropping at Saw Mill so drivers can see around the curve and sign improvements. Around 45 residents filled the freeholders' meeting room Monday a rare turnout for any freeholder meeting. People hammered away ar what they perceived as an inflexible, freeholder board whose three members wanted to go ahead with a road project, despite public outcry. The project was scaled back after the township objected from a major road widening project to the inters section work, said John Glynn, the; county's superintendent of roads? bridges and engineering.
