SPORTS DIGEST HamUton resigns from Wizards By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Leonard Hamilton, Michael Jordan's hand-picked rookie coach of the Washington Wizards, announced his resignation Wednesday night following a season-ending loss to the Toronto Raptors. Hamilton was summoned to Jordan's office immediately after the game, leaving assistant Larry Drew to hold the customary post-game news conference. Hamilton and Jordan met for at least two hours before Hamilton made his annoimce- ment. "I've decided to resign as coach of the Washington Wizards, effective immediately," Hamilton said. "I think it's in the best interests of everybody that I allow their progress to move on with me going in another direction." Hamilton said he had been thinking about quitting for "quite some time," but had given no indication of his plans. Before the game, he said he was planning a full day at the office Thursday He said he didn't tell the players of .his decision after the game because he wanted to teU his wife first. When challenged on whether he was forced to resign, Hamilton said: "I'm straightforward and honest in what I said." If the Wizards had fired Hamilton, they would have been obligated to pay him the remaining three guaranteed years — worth $6 million — of his four-year, $8 million contract. By resigning, Hamilton forfeits that money, unless Jordan offered to buy him out in exchange for making the departure a resignation. Jordan left the building without comment. A team spokesman said no statement would be made, other than Hamilton's. WICHITA STATE 5, KANSAS 4 — At Wichita, Brandon Green hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Wichita State to a 5-4 victory over Kansas on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium. Kansas had taken a 4-2 lead in the top of the 10th after tying the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the ninth. Steve Haines (3-1) was the winning pitcher despite giving up three runs in two innings. The loss went to Randy Strann (1-2), the third KU pitcher in the 10th inning and sixth of the game. Brian Burgamy was 4-for-5, including a home run, and two RBIs for WSU (30-14). Justin McCarty also homered for the Shockers. Brent DelChiaro homered for the Jayhawks (16-24). K-STATE 18, BETHANY 1 — At Manhattan, Nick Sorensen went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs as Kansas State routed Bethany 18-1 Wednesay at Frank Myers Field. Three other Wildcats — Kelvin Day, J.D. Loudabarger and Josh Cavender — drove in three runs each as the Wildcats blistered four Bethany pitchers for 18 hits. Sorensen, Day and Cavender homered for K-State (l"?21). Cavender had three hits. The Wildcats scored twice in each of the first two innings and broke the game open with seven runs in the third. Starting pitcher Wes Vrska (1-1) picked up the victory The loss went to Bethany starter Sean Winters (3-2). MALONE'S TENURE WITH DODGERS MAY BE CLOSE TO BEING OVER — General manager Kevin Malone's career with the Los Angeles Dodgers could be over in a matter of days. A team source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said late Wednesday it's likely Malone would resign or be fired by early today Malone admitted challenging a fan to a fight over the weekend in San Diego, the latest of several incidents that have upset team management. Malone, in the third season of a four-year contract, has not been able to steer the Dodgers into playoff contention despite one of baseball's highest payrolls. CHARGERS ACQUIRE KICKER WADE RICHEY — The San Diego Chargers acquired restricted free agent placekicker from the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday The 49ers did not match an offer sheet that Richey signed with the Chargers last week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The signing spells the end of John Carney's 11-year run as San Diego's kicker. Carney, one of the NFL's most accurate kickers, is San Diego's career scoring leader with 1,076 points. Although he made all 27 extra points last year, Carney made just 18 of 25 field goals.
