on WOR, Ch. 9 Pitchers: Frank Tanana (6-12) vs. Lance Painter (0-2) One out later, Clark grounded to Mets' first-baseman Eddie Murray, who threw the ball into left field trying to force Bichette at second. Galarraga and Bichette scored and, when Orsulak's throw went over catcher Todd Hundley's head, Clark moved to third. He scored on Sheaffer's ground out to make it 3-1.

New York tied it in the bottom of the inning on Bonilla 's one-out single and Jeff Kent's 16th home run of the season. After Colorado took a 7-3 lead, the Mets scored twice in the sixth. Jer-omy Burnitz doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored one out later on Kent's single. Steve Reed relieved Reynoso with a 2-0 count on Ryan Thompson, who wound up walking. Hundley singled to score Kent and pinch-hitter Jeff McKnight followed with a single to left, but Thompson was thrown out at the plate by Clark.

NOTES McKnight is 17-for-50 (.340) as a pinch hitter. Roberto Mejia, who started the game at second base, left in the bottom of the third with a strained right hamstring and remains day-to-day. Four-run sixth inning helps Colorado defeat the Mets, 7-5, and snap a four-game losing streak. NEW YORK (AP) Colorado starting pitcher Armando Reynoso helped himself with a three-run homer, his second of the season, in the four-run sixth inning as the Rockies defeated the New York Mets 7-5 Saturday night to snap a four-game losing streak. The win was the Rockies' first in five games at Shea Stadium.

Reynoso (9-9), who had lost three of his previous four decisions, allowed all five runs on six hits in 5Vs innings. He struck out three and walked one. Darren Holmes pitched the ninth for his 19th save, and 16th in a row. Bobby Jones (1-2) of the Mets allowed seven runs on seven hits in 5 innings while striking out two and walking one. With the game tied 3-3, Dante Bichette opened the Colorado sixth with a double but was thrown out at third on Charlie Hayes' grounder to short.

Jerald Clark singled, sending Hayes to third. Danny Sheaffer was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Vinny Camilla's sacrifice fly scored Hayes. Reynoso jumped on Jones' 2-2 pitch to give the Rockies a 7-3 lead. Mets led early After Joe Orsulak's seventh home run with two outs in the third gave New York a 1-0 lead, the Rockies scored three unearned runs in the fourth on three Mets' errors. Andres Galarraga opened with a double, his second hit of the game.

Bobby Bonilla then threw Bichette's ground ball low to first for an error. By JOHN BELIS Courier-News Staff Writer NEW YORK Eric Young was on top of the world the last time he visited Shea Stadium. That was back on Opening Day and Young, a former Rutgers University star who lives in New Brunswick, was playing in front of his family and friends as he became the first batter in Colorado Rockies history. He also had a hit off Dwight Goo-den that day and stole the first base in franchise history. Four days later, Young led off the Rockies' home opener against the Expos with a home run, becoming the first major-leaguer to homer at Mile High Stadium. Everything was falling into place.

Young was the Rockies' everyday second baseman and leadoff hitter. He started Colorado's first 27 games and was successful on his first nine stolen-base attempts. Yet, when Young returned Thursday night to Shea Stadium, he was there under very different circumstances. This time, he was sitting on the bench. He didn't get into the game until the eighth inning when he pinch hit and popped up.

Young's circumstances changed dramatically at the All-Star break when the Rockies promoted rookie second-baseman Roberto Mejia and gave him Young's job. "Young was not taken off second base because he failed," said Manager Don Baylor. "He was taken off to make room for Mejia. We still feel Eric can make a contribution to the organization." Baylor sees Young as a center fielder. But, until now, he's started just two games in center field.

Baylor feels that he needs to go to the Instructional League at the end of this season to work on his outfield skills. "I played the outfield in college so it's not a difficult transition at all," Young said. "They mentioned going to the Instructional League but they haven't really talked to me about it. "I've heard talk about center field but I don't know what's going on.

I really don't have a preference as far as which position I play. I just want to play. My only goal this year was to establish myself as a major-leaguer and I think I've done that." Young's numbers aren't bad. He's batting .250 with 12 doubles, seven triples, 29 RBI and 47 walks and he leads the team with 33 stolen bases. He's also scored 63 runs and that's the most important statistic as far as he's concerned.

"At the beginning of the year, when I was playing every day, I thought I could score 100 runs," he recalled. "I worked on improving my on-base percentage and getting more walks. It's just a matter of learning the strike zone. "When I was with the Dodgers last year, Brett Butler told me I should try to get a walk every game. I've tried to incorporate that in my game.

Guys appreciate it when you bust your butt and get that RBI for them." The Rockies want to see Young hit the ball on the ground more often so that he can take advantage of his speed. "I think I've had a pretty good year for somebody in his first full big-league season," Young said. "I think my numbers are pretty good. "Just because I'm not playing every day there's nothing I can do about that. There's no disappointment at all.

I'm in the big leagues. How could I be disappointed?" (AP) Mickey Tettleton and Alan Trammell hit home runs to back eight strong innings from Mike Moore as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-3 Saturday for their seventh straight victory. The Tigers have not won seven games in a row since August 1991. The A's losing streak reached nine games, their longest since June 1986.

Tettleton hit a solo homer in the ninth off Dennis Eckersley to pass teammate Cecil Fielder and become the first Tiger to reach 30 homers this season. Trammell extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff home run in the fifth, his seventh, cutting Oakland's lead to 2-1. White Sox 4, Twins 1 CHICAGO Rookie Jason Bere pitched eight scoreless innings, limiting Minnesota to four hits and leading the Chicago White Sox over the Twins. Ellis Burks homered and drove in two runs as Chicago beat the Twins for the eighth time in 11 games. NATIONAL LEAGUE Padres 5, Pirates 3 PITTSBURGH Scott Sanders pitched six-hit ball for 8Vs innings in his third major-league start as the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for their fifth straight victory.

Sanders (2-0) gave up three runs, walked two and struck out six. Mark Davis got one out in the ninth and Gene Harris finished for his 20th save. Sanders was the Padres' first-round draft pick in 1990. Braves 5, Cubs 1 ATLANTA Steve Avery helped Atlanta rebound from a tough loss with a six-hitter for his 15th victory as the Braves beat the Chicago Cubs. The win moved Atlanta within four games of first-place San Francisco in the NL West.

It's the closest the Braves have been to the Giants since May 29 when they were also four games behind. The Giants were idle Saturday because of a preseason NFL game at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami. Red Sox 2, Royals 1 KANSAS CITY, Mo. Rob Deer's run-scoring double with two outs in the 11th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a victory over the Kansas City Royals. It was Boston's third straight win.

Mike Greenwell led off the 11th with a double and took third on Andre Dawson's fly ball to the warning track in left field. After Carlos Quin-tana bounced out to first base, Deer lined a double down the left-field line off reliever Jeff Montgomery (3-5). Jeff Russell (1-4) pitched 1 innings for the victory. Angels 6, Brewers 2 MILWAUKEE Chris Turner singled and doubled home his first major league RBIs and Luis Polonia had four hits as the California Angels snapped the Milwaukee Brewers' seven-game winning streak. Nolan Ryan's still hurting ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Nolan Ryan's return to the Texas Rangers' rotation remains on hold after he threw for five minutes Saturday. Ryan said the pulled muscle in his left ribcage gave him discomfort after only a few pitches and he stopped throwing to avoid further damage. "I knew if I continued to throw I was going to have more problems, so I quit," Ryan said. Ryan was tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday in Boston but the Rangers will continue with a four-man Friday night's late baseball boxscoresC-2 rotation until he is healthy enough to return. 1.
