Push Student Registration By LOUISE COOK Associated Press Writer The student government at Colorado State University rented two school buses for $50 and ferried students to the courthouse in nearby Fort Collins for voter registration. "We had expected about 300 students to use the buses," said Ron Heard, the coordinator of the drive, "but somewhere between 500 and 525 registered on that day." On Many Campuses Voter registration drives are getting under way on campuses all across the country this fall with nearly 5 million students among the 11.4 million newly enfranchised young people between the ages of 18 and 21. An Associated Press survey showed the drives are meeting with mixed response: Spokesmen at some schools, such as | Colorado State, reported turn outs larger than expected; others said there was little interest in registration; still others said it was too early to tell. The registration drives took varying forms—voting booths on campus, editorials in student newspaapers, appearances by local and national politicians and campaigns by specially formed student groups. A National Convention The National Association of Student Governments, the Council of Undergraduate Deans and the Washington University Student Union are sponsoring jointly a meeting Nov. 19-21 that's billed as a national convention "to initiate student voter registration." Helen Page, president of the Student Union, said about 2,000 student government leaders j from throughout the country i were expected to attend the meeting at Washington University in St. Louis. The Nebraska League of Young Voters and the student government at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln plan a Nov. 1-5 voter registration drive among college students in the state. "We hope to register between 10,000 and 13,000 newly enfranchised voters who are now eligible, but not yet registered," said Mike Nelson, acting cochairman of the young voters league. Week-Long Drive A week-long voter registration drive began Monday at the University of Maryland's College Park campus. The registration center was in the student union and was manned by registrars from the state board of elections. Willard Morris, the state election supervisor, estimated 12,000 of the university's 35,000 students would register during the drive. Archaeologists Have Made A Rare Find BAGINTON, England (AP) Archaeologists who found a Roman fort here have uncovered evidence of a massive eight-to- 10-foot-high palisade with smooth interior walls enclosing a perfectly circular area more than 107 feet in diameter. They said to complete it the Romans must have removed 1,000 tons of sand and gravel—a feat still unexplained.
