Swenson taught there in 1915-16 and Broden had the classes from 1916 into 1918. "We sure hope to have lots of former teachers and students with us then," said Melford Roragen, chairman of the event and also a former student in the eight-grade school. He attended the school four years, beginning in 1922, when, he recalled, there were 50 to 60 students.

Enrollment in Lakeview named because of small lake nearby reached its peak of about 70 between 1915 and 1921, Roragen said. "There were two teachers then sort of a senior and junior department," he said. School District 69 was dissolved in 1946. Gail Jacobson of East Grand Forks was the teacher then. She was 17 years old at the start of the school term that had 11 students.

Gail Kaste's class included the sister of her husband, Alton Kaste, and five of their cousins. Those children didn't lack for a thing," she said in a telephone interview from her home in Northport, Wash. "It was like a family, and they helped one another. A lot of those kids I taught went on and did a lot of good things," she said proudly. Kaste, 62, won't be able to make the reunion.

"I will be working in my exciting job of forest fire lookout on Flagstaff Mountain. It overlooks the Columbia River," she said. "I don't get away from about the middle of June until the first of October. I spend my time up on my mountain then." After the school was closed, the building became the Garfield Township Hall. Subsequently, it was sold to Solon Gullickson and, after he died, was donated to the fair board.

Nelson said one room will be restored and the other room will be used to house exhibits of education in Polk County. i 4 4 -V 7 dren; and sister, Hedwig Kaeter, St. Cloud. She was preceded in death by her parents. Max Slater, 65, Milaca MILAC A Max Slater, 65, died Friday at his home.

Moved from its Garfield Township location since 1882 to the Polk County Fairgrounds 4Vi miles away in Fertile, "It came through real good," said Robert Nelson, president of the fair board.

And no new cracks were noticed in irreplaceable slate blackboards on four walls in the former two-room country school, Nelson said about the school's trek. The damage assessment was true even after wheels on moving dollies under the structure settled deeply into unstable drift sand. Extra power needed to get loose and rolling again was provided by a four-wheel-drive tractor. The next big event for the 108-year-old structure will be a dedication as a museum and reunion of classes July 13 during the Polk County Fair.
