THE CAMPAIGN '96 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1996 A3 T ROSS PEROT Perot running a quiet campaign PNEUMONIA SHOTS S20 No Co-Payment • Medicare B Reform Party candidate makes few public appearances in latest run for the presidency 6y The Associated Press * DALLAS Ross Perot, who advocates a shorter campaign period, is cutting his own to the bone. With only one month left until Election Day, the Texan's calendar of public events !is almost bare. He is still getting on television, though not as often as he would like. And as the race enters the home stretch, he has only one an- nounced public appearance, before the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles on Oct. 22. "It's unconventional," spokeswoman Sharon Hoi- man responded when asked whether it was likely that Perot could mount -^ or was even interested in mounting — the new campaign that had been promised. "We hope within the next couple of days to put out a full calendar. We've got 28 days. That's plenty," she said. Holman described the promised program as PEROT vaguely similar to the campaign trail traveled by traditional candidates, although without scheduled news conferences. "It'll be a combination of rallies and 30- minute infomercials," she said, adding that Perot had approved a proposed schedule that would be released today. Since Perot accepted'the Reform Party nomination on Aug. 18, he has had only one rally and has had no question-and-answer news conferences. He has made fewer than one appearance each week. Holman says the Dallas businessman prefers to sleep at home, using local studios and satellite connections to reach the voters. 10-11/10-12-96 511 E. Iron 1201 W. Crawford 2012 S. J "I'm comfortable with my con- ''science. We're doing our job," •Gingrich said after touring an ele- .mentary school in his district. ; "I think you all (in the media) •have some responsibility for allowing politics in this country to 'decay to where Washington union bosses can ;Xise falsehoods to try to buy an -election." I The AFL-CIO }has said it will ;spend $35 million in this fall's cam. paign to help unseat congressional Republicans. It is using the money to buy televi- •sion ad time in districts of vulner- r'able GOP members for "issue edu- Hfiation". spots that criticize the Republican record "in Congress and 'to pay for grassroots organizing. • ', A swing of 18 seats in the Nov. 5 'elections would throw control of ^ttje House to the Democrats, who ;k»st Congress to the Republicans »two years ago. * Although polls show that only one in four Americans has a favorable impression of Gingrich, the speaker said "the only circum- •stance where we could lose control" is if the unions spend $100 pillion or more. ;• Asked if he would accept any of »the blame if the GOP loses the "House, Gingrich said, "I'd have 'played some (role), but the truth is without the. union bosses we'd be gaining at least 30 seats." Steve Rosenthal, a political organizer for the AFL-CIO, countered that Republicans have "waged an attack on working families. We have put a bright spotlight on that, and they don't like it. ... The campaign is having an enormous impact on working people, and that's why they're complaining as much as they are." In Washington, party Chairman Haley Barbour called a news conference to renew complaints that the labor campaign is being fi-. nanced by dues money, including dollars from union members who might favor Republican candidates. The ads, which he called misleading, are having an effect, Barbour said. Asked to identify mistakes made during his two years as speaker, Gingrich said the GOP should have chosen its words more carefully in pushing its Medicare reform proposal. The Democrats have misrepresented the GOP plan to scare senior citizens, he charged. "We underestimated the degree to which they (Democrats) would leave the truth behind and say it with a ruthlessness and a weight of money that had never been seen before," Gingrich said at a luncheon for business leaders at a country club in Kennesaw. Gingrich kicked off a day of campaigning Tuesday by accusing President Clinton of using Sunday night's debate to misrepresent the Medicare overhaul effort. "It was a deliberately dishonest performance," he told a breakfast meeting of a business group. He insisted that the GOP does not plan to cut Medicare spending, just slow its growth. At the luncheon later, Gingrich rubbed shoulders briefly with his Democratic opponent in the 6th District, cookie company millionaire Michael Coles. After the two exchanged a pleasant greeting, Gingrich delivered his speech while Coles sat at a table off to the side and took notes. 12 MONTHS NO INTEREST & NO PAYMENTS!* BUY NOW!
