Georgia beats Page 6 Sunday, September 13,1981 Wisconsin shocks Michigan By United Press International It was bound to happen sooner or later, but Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler certainly didn't expect it to occur when his Wolverines were rated as the top team in the nation. The University of Wisconsin, which had not beaten Michigan since 1962 and had been outscored 176-0 in their last four meetings, upset the Wolverines 21-14 Saturday before a Jubilant borne crowd of 68,733 at Camp Randall Stadium. "I told the squad before the game that outside the guys right here in mis room, there probably isn't anyone who believes or knows we can win this football game," said Wisconsin Coach Dave McClain. "A lot of people didn't give us much of a chance, but we believe we can do it. It 's the greatest thing that ever happened to Schembechler found it easy to put the game in perspective.

"Our offense wasn't any good; our defense wasn't any good; our kicking game wasn't any good, and our coaching was be said. "It's a miracle we only lost by seven points. "It's as simple as this. We're not as good as everybody thought we were, and they're a lot better than anyone thought they Jess Cole threw two touchdown passes one a 71- yard screen pass to John Williams and Chucky Davis scored on a 1-yard run to spark Wisconsin. Michigan had taken a 7-0 lead on quarterbck Steve Smith's 2-yard run with 9:17 left in the second period before Wisconsin roared back to take a 14-7 lead at the half.

Cole hit Marvin Neal with a 7-yard TD pass with 3:47 left in the half and Davis' 1-yard run with 2 seconds left before intermission gave the Badgers the momentum for the final 30 minutes. However, Michigan struck first in the third period on an 89-yard TD run by Butch Woolfolk that tied the game 14-14. But with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Cole hit Williams with the deciding TD. Two plays before the score, Michigan had Wisconsin in a second-and 21 situation on the Wisconsin 19 but got called for pass interference.

Free safety Matt Van den Boom led the Wisconsin defense by intercepting three passes by Smith, the last one with 2 seconds left in the game. Wisconsin's triumph was not the only startling result in college football's second week of play. Georgia Tech surprised No. 3 Alabama 24-21 and Iowa upset No. 6 Nebraska 10-7.

Phillips scored on a 3-yard run, Lon Olejniczak kicked a 35-yard field and the Iowa defense took advantage Nebraska turnovers to produce its victory. Phillips' TD came with 9:16 left in the first quarter and Olejniczak kicked his field goal an the first play of the second quartejr. Tlge Hawkeye defense then took over and held Nebraska scoreless until 11:42 remained in the game when Roger Craig scored from 2 yards out. Nebraska was hampered throughout the game by poor field position and turnovers. The Cornhuskers lost three fumbles and'suffered two interceptions.

tailback Robert Lavette scored two TDs and quarterback Mike KeUey engineered a gutty comeback to lead Georgia Tech over Alabama for its first College Football Scores victory over the Crimson Tide in 19 years. Trailing 2117 late in the game, Georgia Tech drove 80 yards on nine plays for the winning touchdown, scored on a 2- yard run by Lavette with 3:57 left in the game. (UPI) Quarterback Buck Belue passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Herschel Walker rushed for 167 yards despite being bothered by a bruised right hand Saturday to lead defending national champion Georgia to a 27-13 victory over California and extend the Bulldogs' winning streak to 15 games.

Belue threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to fullback Ronnie Stewart to give eighth-ranked Georgia an 8-7 lead with 4:26 left in the first period and scored himself on a 14-yard keeper with 4:46 left in the first half to put the Bulldogs back in the lead again at 14-10. The Golden Bears, relying almost entirely on the passing of J. Torchio, who threw for 249 yards before being forced out of the game early in the final quarter by an injury, led 7-2 early in the first quarter after Torchio threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Mariet Ford and went ahead again early in the second quarter, 10-8, on a 29-yard field goal by Joe Cooper. But Georgia, which got two points in the opening seconds of the game when California punter Mike Ahr was tackled in his end zone for a safety, led 17-10 at the end of the first half, thanks to a 24-yard field goal by Kevin Butler only 9 seconds before intermission. Walker, who had 101 yards on 22 carries in the first half, broke loose on a 21-yard run to set up a touchdown by his understudy Carnie Norris, who scored on the second of two 6-yard runs to make it 24-10 Georgia with 8:55 left in the third period.

The Bulldogs widened their lead to 27-10 with 3:20 left in the third quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Butler. Freshman Jeff Walsh took over at quarterback for California after Torchio was injured and twice got the Bears within scoring distance in the final quarter. The first time, they settled for Cooper's 47-yard field goal which accounted for the final scoring in the game with 10:20 left to play. The other time, Walsh got the Bears to the Georgia 19 but then lost the ball on a fumble. Walker, who had 161 yards last week against Tennessee, carried the ball 34 times while raising his two- game total to 328 yards, but only one touchdown.

49ers play Bears today SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears, their own worst enemies a week ago, look for vastly improved play this Sunday when they meet at Candlestick Park. The Bears lost six fumbles, dropped three passes and were 'assessed 10 penalties last week in a 16-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The last Chicago fumble proved the biggest of alL the Bears giving up the ball on the Green Bay one- yard line with 23 seconds left and thereby losing their chance for a tie and second life in overtime. The 49ers weren't as sloppy, losing two fumbles, suffering eight penalties and breaking down time and again with the special teams. It all added up to a 24-17 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Since last Sunday, the Bears have added one new man rookie wide receiver Marcus Anderson of Ttdane. Be was signed after Kris Haines, also a wide receiver, suffered injury to his left knee and Bat Chicago, primarily a running team, is already strong at with regulars Watts and Brian and rookie Ken All-America from The expectation this year was that the Bears would throw the ball more, thereby making Walter Payton an important weapon rather than a consistent battering ram. Against the Packers, quar- trerback Vince Evans threw the ball 35 times but hit on only 17 attempts for a negligble 185 yards. The Bears are supposed to be vulnerable against the run up the middle, something most teams would jump at an exploit. But San Francisco is having running back problems and unless Paul Hofer, coming back from a 1980 knee injury, is fully recovered and able to perform at his best, the 49ers don't have much pop running the ball, and least of all up the middle.

Hofer got in for one play against the Lions last Sunday and the hope is he can play a little more this week against the Bears. Coach Bill Walsh isn't all that anxious to rush Hofer with 14 games remaining after this week. To take up the slack and to provide fullback Earl Cooper ninnlng help, the 49ers have re-signed Lenvil Elliott, cut three weeksago. Last week, Ricky Patton. a cousin of Payton's, ran well as Cooper's partner but he is a poor pass receiver and in the San Francisco offense the halfback has to catch Ids share of passes.

The tters also signed rookie Amos Lawrence of North Carolina, that school's all-time rushing leader in total offense. Lawrence was a fourth-round draft pick of San Diego but when he couldn't reach contract terms with the Chargers he decided to sit out the season. The 49ers worked a trade with San Diego for Lawrence, giving up a future undisclosed draft choice. There is no chance he will play Sunday because he hasn't had any training. Joe Montana passed well against Detroit (18 for 28.

195 yards, one touchdown) but had little to show for his effort. He'll be cast in the same role against Chicago, which will throw the ball about 35 to 40 times. On the other side, Payton can be expected to carry the ball at least 30 times games on Sunday include: Cincinnati at Buffalo, Atlanta at Green Bay. Houston at Cleveland, Los Angeles at New Orleans, New York Giants at Washington, Buffalo at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at Kansas City, Denver at Seattle. Detroit at San Diego, New England at Philadelphia and S.

Louis at Dallas. On Monday night Oakland Will be at Minnesota..
