Vahoo 17.31 -.31 Fed likely will continue to cut interest rates as inflation threat wanes By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Industrial production, whicli has been bearing the brunt of the economic slowdown, rose in March for the first time in six months. Economists welcomed the good news but weren't ready to declare victory against recession. The sluggish economy, meanwhile, is helping on the inflation front. Consumer prices were nearly flat last month as energy prices retreated. With inflation posing little current risk to the economy, the Federal Reserve has room to continue cutting interest rates in an effort to rejuvenate the manufacturing sector as well as the larger economy, analysts said of Tuesday's reports. On Wall Street, the encouraging economic news helped to give stocks a modest lift. The Dow Jones industrial average, after spending much of the session down, fmished the day up 58.17 points at 10,216.73. i After five straight months of T RAYTHEON AIRCRAR Factory output Here is a look at the industrial production index. The performance surprised many analysts who were predicting another drop, and it raised fresh hope that the economy may be bouncing back. Jerry Jasinowski, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, called the unexpected rise in industrial output "a welcome first sign of recovery But we're not really out of the slowdown woods yet." In March, factory output grew by 0.3 percent, led by a jump in car production. Gas and electric utilities increased production by 1.1 percent and mining went up by 0.8 percent. In February, total industrial output dropped by 0.4 percent as production at factories and utilities fell and mining output rose. "The industrial sector has stopped its free fall," said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors. "If manufacturing starts looking up, the impression of an economy in recession will disappear quickly" The weak economy has been hardest on the industrial sector, which many believe has been suffering through its own recession. The Fed said that in the first three months of this year, industrial production contracted at an annual rate of 4.7 percent, the biggest quarterly decline since the first quarter of 1991. Raytheon rolls out new jet Hawker Horizon has a trans-Atlantic range and airline speeds By The Associated Press WICHITA — Raytheon Aircraft unveiled Tuesday its first Hawker Horizon — the largest business jet built by the company in its 70-year history "It is a giant step forward for our company," Hansel Tookes, Raytheon chairman and chief executive officer, told employees and community leaders gathered at the ceremonial rollout. Raytheon employs 10,200 people in Kansas, including about 600 at its plant in Salina where wings and other components are made. The $16.9 million Hawker Horizon, which the company calls a "super mid-size" business jet, can fly nonstop between New York and Paris at airline speeds, making it a truly intercontinental aircraft. Raytheon already has orders and options for 150 Hawker Horizons. "I think it shows you this aircraft is really ready for the marketplace," said Karl Childs, vice president of sales and marketing at Raytheon. Executive Jet, which pioneered the idea of time-sharing corporate jets, plans to buy 50 Hawker Horizons with an option for 50 more — an order worth $2 billion. Raytheon Aircraft's own fractional ownership company, Raytheon Travel Air, has 27 Horizons on order. The Horizon features a carbon fiber composite fuselage, made in three pieces, that is MARKETS lighter and stronger than metal. It is typically configured for eight passengers. "We are witnessing the transformation of a company moving into the future with new and exciting products — a company which is moving from old manufacturing methods to new," Tookes said. The company plans to produce 36 Horizons per year The Horizon's first flight is expected this summer and FAA certification is expected in 2003. Raytheon's Premier I business jet received certification last month from the Federal Aviation Administration. The Horizon's rollout comes just two weeks after Raytheon Aircraft announced it was eliminating about 450 administrative and managerial jobs in Kansas as a pre-emptory move in a soft economy MONEY RATES Daily money rates Irom The Associated Press.
