LANE AND WORTHAM TALK. The Former Pays His Respects to A. J. Rosenthal and the Latter Goes After the Populist Scalp--Great Enthusiasm. Harmony hall was pretty well packed last night with people who were desirous of hearing the speeches of Hon.

Jonathan Lime of LagruuKC and W. IJ. Worthnm of Austin, democratic nominee for state treasurer. The speaking was under the auspices of the democratic campalRn committee. The audience was attentive but enthusiastic, and both Mr.

Lane and Mr. Wurtlmm were almost constantly applauded in the wildest way. The following gentlemen occupied seats on the platform: Captain James McDonald, Oeorffe Dermody. Mat Coffey, W. F.

Turnley, Jim Sherwood, Joe Meyers, P. N. John Wejjner. Major Jenlnnc. Hob Webber, John Lovejoy, Nicholas Weekes, AV.

B. Wortham of Austin, Charley Jordan. Jim Daly, Captain Agullo, Charley Brown and The meeting was called to order by Captain McDonald, after which Turnley read the following letter amid deafening applause: W. F. Turnley, Chairman Democratic Executive Dear Sir: Your note requesting: my participation in the democratic rally to-night received.

Thanking you for your kind consideration, 1 have to express my regret that my confinement at my residence by severe Illness prevents my testifying by my presence my deep Interest in the success of Undemocratic ticket all aloiiff the line. There fa so much unfairness in the made on Mr. Crowley, the nominee for congress, it ough't. and I think will, have the effect of rallying to his support every man in the district whoso democracy Is founded on a belief hi the of democratic principles in the government of this country. Count me heartily with you in the spirit.

Lane ypokc In substance UK follows: "I appear here to-night not In my own iuterewt, than that my Interest is Identical wit'h thH-t of every oUmr democrat In the sla-tc of 'IVxus. I Thing that ought to done an Colonel Greslmm was a candidate, that Galvoston should give her vote to film, and I never attempted, don't suppose it would have done any good to hove tried, to capture enmity, but when in the convention It was thought by everybody HUTU vvhu knew a i about the conditions a neither Colom-l C-roshnm jior myself could be nominated, and two-thirds, yes, over two-thirds, of convention, as good men as I have ever met in any convention, and I have been attending them since was 21 years of nfie, vouched for Mr.

CYow ley's being a good man for representative. In that convention we vouched for his character and his brains, and, gentlemen, can you i of a better Indorsement a of surh a convention? Whenever any mrin ap- Iioars before an audience and undertakes to advocate the interests of the nominees of any political party he ought at least have some reason and give It to the people why he prefers one party to another. It seems to me Unit read a long time ago somowhrre that men are born free and eiiual. I have heard such language as that and doubtless you have all heard It. have always believed that Thomas Jefferson wrote the truth when' he wrote that.

Of course Jefferson did not mean that all men were born equal Intellectually. We know he xlid not moan a i It would have been absurd and Jefferson, like all Rood democrats, would toll the truth and did tell the He did not mean cither that all men were born equal nor that all men were born equal in so far as i a i a conditions are concerned. I understand, and the declaration of Independence so declares, that all men are born free and fqual before the law and politically speaking. He flaunts himself about with great arrogance -like a i bantam rooster and says democratic party 1ms not srnso enough grapple with the great governmental questions. Why. my fellow-citizens, I tell you the proposition coming from such a source, It was uot highly amusing, would be absolutely contempt In the eyes of decent people.

I do not know a i about Mr. MoBiidc except' what I have heard, but 1 do know that a short limn ago, If rumor Is correct, and it has never been denied, he lived In Nebraska. and left there, moving to Texas and settling In Aivln. I-le has been there live or six years. When lie was in Nebraska he was republlenn.

He was In favor of a strong centralized "government up there; lie was in favor of a high protective tariff un there; he wan in favor of letting the railroads no like they pleased up there; he In favor of 'trusts and combines up there; he was, in short, a full Hedged, dyed In Iho wool rupublhjan up a while, and I do not know why he loft there and don't reckon you do. Now when ho gets to Texas he becomes a populist, down on Cleveland because of his action in suppressing the rlut at Chicago. He Is now In favor of everything that the republicans are not In favor of and for anything they arc against. He bus his coat wrong filde out. 1 doubt 1 the man knows what Is meant by political principles; know If he wt-nt to meet it ill roaI; hut reckon- he la willing to he anything for office, i will tell you aii an- ocdoti -if you will crccuoo.

What Is the matter -with Mllea Crowley? They tell us thut he Is a rough, uncouth man. They can overlook that. They tell It that he Is a. cotton jammer. Look over the histories vf great men.

Franklin was once a tallow uhundler; Jim Hogg burnt brush down In east Texas In old Smith county. A few days ago the honorable and learned Judge Slay ton passed away, lie was once a blacksmith. Down In this county because a man Is poor it must be thrown up to i as long as ho lives. know Crowley tolerably well, and except that he stopped at a respectable hotel Instead of a wagon yard know nothing against him. Now he is your nominee for congress. I believe 1C 1 were Roger Q. Mills or Horace Chllton look out for my In the United States senate. I was In Bni- zoria county, and people cume lo me and said: 'Don't worry about These blue or green back books (Terry on Crowley) have done him no harm. The democratic parly to-day stands shoulder to shoulder against its old enemy. When you have majority its respectability is aMaurcd for the next two years.

Then there Is the party led by Jim Mavis nnd other fellows. Texas, i her great lands, sends to-day a congressional delegation to Washington a is second lo none in the land. inlvtHton, Jct. The News: k-tti-r of Jumu.s G. For more a forty years I have been a citizen of Gulveston and for forty-five years have been, am now and shall ever continue to be a democrat, "whose devotion and adherence to democratic principles has never been uucsllone-d and who has never affiliated with any other party. Httitcc this letter Is in part addressed to me ami I have therefore the right to protest against the undemocratic, corrupt- Ing and abominable doctrines it seeks to inculcate.

I know nothing of the person who wrote It, from dictatorial spirit und (he matter It contains am satisfied that however fit a representative he may be of those a given him his position he Is not a fit exponent of the democratic parly, and for onn distinctly repudiate his doctrines and his a i and denounce his. a to instruct democrat, 1 or honoMt in their iltny as arrogant and unwarrantable. lie says: "1 notice In the public journals that nn attempt Is being made by a few democrats In Galveston to bring about the defeat of the demoenitir nominee fnr in the Tenth district and thereby turn over a democratic, district to republican representation in the next congress."
