T ADVICE Ann's preference is to avoid the use of 'fimny unc Dear Readers: This wiU be a landmark column — the last in which I refer to "funny uncles." A few weeks ago, I cautioned that letting children run around naked in front of others was inappropriate. I said, "Children should be covered in case there's a 'funny uncle' around." More than a himdred uncles who spend time on a regular basis with their nieces and nephews have let me know they were highly insulted and that there is. nothing "funny" about them. Also, several readers advised me that the problem is not gender-specific— that there are at least as many "funny aunts" out there. So, dear readers, I shall choose my words with more caution. And now, here's another gentle clobber on a different subject: ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. Dear Ann Landers: Thank you for your recent column on gay children being told by their parents, "We know, and it's OK with us." You have enlightened millions of people on this subject. However, will you please stop using the phrase "sexual preference"? To give the impression that we prefer partners of the same sex is not accurate. It implies that we have a choice. This is not a preference. This is the way we were born.—Terry in Dallas Dear Terry: I no longer use the phrase "sexual preference," although many of my readers continue to do so. I prefer "sexual orientation." This is a subject about which there still is entirely too much ignorance. It's high time we discarded the prejudices and let some sunshine in. And now comes a letter that, if heeded, could save some overly optimistic women a ton of trouble: Dear Ann Landers: Please teU your women readers who are considermg marriage to a gay male, in the hope of "straight ening him out," that it will not work. I know, because I went down that path. It leads nowhere except to pain and trouble. Males who go both ways almost always prefer members of theur own sex. Marriage win not make them "normal." Even marriage and children wUl not make them straight, although many of these men make a genuine effort. I hope you can get this message across, Ann, because too many lives have been ruined by people who believe they can beat the odds. WeU, take the word of someone who knows from experience. It cannot be done. — Anonymous in California Dear California: Thanks for your words of wisdom. No one can tell a story more convincingly than someone who has "been there," and you certainly have. Dear Ann Landers: I have been married to "Rusty" for 30 years, and we have two teen-age children. About halfway through our marriage. Rusty began to suffer from se vere depression, which was not dia^nosi'ii until eight months ago. Our children and I lived in misery with him all those years, and there is a lot of resentment and liurt (r^.;i' the way he treated us. Rusty is on medication now and is act in:; like a human again. However, the rest ot iis are having a hard time forgiving liini, I ie made us suffer enormously yet he seems to think we should just forget about it. Well, wr cannot get over it that easily Can you li^lp us? — Stm Suffering in the South Dear Suffering: You sufferers need tiiei apy to get over your anger Nothing will change until you get counseling, Depressi-".! people can be mean and difficult to 1 i ve w i tl i. You have been through the worst of it. aiii! now, it is time to rejoice in Rusty's reeovi r> Instead of thinking of ways to punish liin; for the way he treated you, he!]) liirn aii.i yourselves by putting the past behind you.
