A8 MONDAY. APRIL 16, 2001 RELIGION THE SALINA JOURNAL • MIDDLE EAST Israel warplanes attack Syrian radar sites Israeli fighters launch attack on Syrian army deep inside Lebanon By The Associated Press BEIRUT, Lebanon — Striking deeply into Lebanon, Israeli warplanes attacked Syrian radar in the central mountains early today, the first action' against the Syrian army in Lebanon since 1996, Israeli and T EASTER Lebanese officials said. "Air force planes this evening attacked a radar target of the Syrian army," the Israeli military said in a statement. "The attack is in the wake of Hezbol lah attacks in recent months, the most recent last week" when an Israeli soldier was killed. The raid focused on an area where Syrian troops maintain radar bases with tanks and armored personnel carriers. The Israelis said all its planes returned safely, but there was no immediate word on casualties or damage on the ground as at least three impacts were heard shortly after midnight in the region of Dahr el-Baidar, a mountain pass on the road between Beirut, the Lebanese capital, and Damascus, Syria's capital. The Israeli statement said the radar at Dahar el-Beidar was the target. The Israeli jets roared on several runs as tracers from Christians celebrate Easter around world Death, resurrection of Christ is message of hope for many By The Associated Press LONDON — In grand cathedrals, tiny churches and quiet cemeteries, the world's Christians celebrated Easter on Sunday, each community drawing its own message of hope from the story of Christ's death and resurrection. In one of the world's war-torn capitals, Grozny in Chechnya, 170 people gathered in the ruins of a church under heavy guard against rebel attack. The Russian Orthodox congregation, mostly elderly, stood in the open air among jagged brick walls, while priests chanted, genuflected and blessed the crowd with holy water "This is the first bright day in two years," said Natalia Nefedo- va. "I wish people could live without fighting, without war. I'm really afraid every night during the exchange of fire." After the service, priests went to Russian military barracks in the city and blessed young conscripts who stood holding candles. Pope John Paul II, frail and at moments wobbly expressed hope Sunday that the message of Easter can inspire humanity to defeat evil and bring peace to the Middle East, the Balkans, Africa and other places plagued by violence. "Men and women of the third millennium, the Easter gift of light that scatters the darkness of fear and sadness is meant for everyone," John Paul said near the end of a two-hour ceremony in St. Peter's Square, where close to 100,000 people braved unusually chilly weather for a Roman spring. "Rediscover with joy and wonder that the world is no longer a slave to the inevitable. The world of ours can change; peace is possible even where for too long there has been fighting and death," the pontiff said, naming the Holy Land, Jerusalem, the Balkans, Africa, Asia and Latin America. At Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where tradition says Christ was crucified, the Latin — or Roman Catholic — Patriarch Michel Sabbah, a Palestinian, called in his sermon for peace but criticized Israeli actions against the Palestinians during the current fighting. The resurrection of Jesus, he said, is a message of hope for POOL SERVICE SPA SERVICE WATER CHEMISTRY Poors Plus of Salina 823-POOL* 2501 Market Place For complete stock listings go to yalioiirt>al,com Salina Journal "online Connecting communities toitli infomation The Associated Press Pope John Paul sprinkles holy water as he arrives Sunday in St. Peter's Square for Easter lUlass. The Church of England's senior clergyman offered words of comfort to citizens wearied by months of rain and an epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease. "Some have talked of our recent trials and tribulations as the 'judgment of God,' " said Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey "I resist that notion. "For me, they challenge us to understand more deeply not God's judgment, but his love and what that offers us. And there is no better time to ponder that than at Easter." President Bush, his family and his parents celebrated Easter at a sunrise church service in Texas, joining in a prayer of thanks for the safe return of 24 U.S. service members held in China. Holiday taxes pope Age and physical ailments have taken their toll on the pope, who turns 81 next month. As he made his way to the altar on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica, John Paul at one point swayed and appeared to lose his balance. Two aides quickly grabbed his arms and steadied him. Sunday's late-morning Mass was the last in a series of taxing Holy Week appearances for John Paul that included a long, late night Saturday vigil held in the basilica instead of in the square because of the rain.
