NEWS & VIEWS SUSA WEEKENT Readers react to Phillips story I am appalled at the lax treatment in court afforded Lawrence Phillips, the pro football player who pleaded no contest to beating his girlfriend at the University of Nebraska ("Out of bounds," Aug. 23-25). But coach Tom Osborae shouldn't have had any more right to kick him off the team than his math professor would have had to kick him out of class. Only the University of Nebraska should be able to expel Phillips, using the same due process extended to any student in the same circumstances. PAUL McSPADDEN Panama City, Fla. In a country where there is an increase in violence against women, why would you choose to put Phillips on the cover? This romanticizes his crimes. JOANNE MONATH Fort Collins, Colo. If athletes weren't treated like gods, perhaps their behavior would not be as it is. RAY F. DIVELY Baden, Pa, Your story made it sound as if no one has done anything to set behavioral standards for college athletes. But here in Idaho, where I am president of the state board of education, our board last year adopted a policy that prohibits public colleges from recruiting anyone convicted of a felony. The policy also requires that any student convicted of a felony be removed from intercollegiate play. Athletes, like everyone else, should be held accountable for their actions.
