MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY READERS HELPING OTHERS Wired to help V OLUNTEERS often are people plugged in to the wider world and interested in the future. No wonder computer users have embraced Make A Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 26, the sixth annual day of helping others. Webstock and Netday are two new digital communities that encourage computer users to take part. WEBSTOCK96 Do Something, a three-year-old non-profit, invites you to this Nov. 1-4 festival on the Internet. Melrose Place star Andrew Shue — a co-founder of Do Something and a former Make A Difference Day judge — and other celebrities will be featured in live chats. Webheads also are encouraged to spend the month of October performing "acts of kindness and justice." Organizers suggest making a special effort on Make A Difference Day. NETDAY Last year, 50,000 volunteers wired 2,500 California schools for the Internet. Estimated savings: $3 million. This year, the effort goes national. The goal: wire at least 26,000 K-12 schools — 20 percent of U.S. schools — by Oct. 26. Volunteers across the nation will pitch in.
