Authorities said Wednesday 17 members of the 44-member group have been arrested and 11 of those have been convicted. Officers said the 44 members started by shaking down pedestrians and snatching purses last fall and graduated to armed robbery and attempted murder. "They're just a bunch of shorties 13, 14 and 15 years old," said one unidentified resident of the neighborhood. "But the crimes they were commit- ting, you'd think they were 28 or 30 years old pulling guns on people and stuff like that. "For a few months here, somebody was getting robbed walking down the street every weekend," said the resident.

"They were real bad kids, real violent. I'm glad to see the last of them." Not everybody is convinced the problem is solved for good. The 10-year mandatory prison term was handed down against Donald Raulerson of Fort Pierce. The FBI identifies him as the leader of a sophisticated drug trafficking ring in the "Operation Bancoshares" investigation.

After the sentencing, U.S. District Judge C. Clyde Atkins ordered Raulerson into the custody of the U.S. marshal. In the 21fc-year "sting" operation, undercover federal agents set up a bogus money laundering shop that handled more than $200 million for drug smugglers.

Raulerson pleaded guilty last year to federal charges of racketeering, importing marijuana and conspiracy to import marijuana. After his guilty plea, four other Operation. Bancoshares defendants were convicted of drug trafficking by a jury of nine men and three women. Ten other defendants in the case were found innocent by the jury. The FBI set up CRV Associates in a seedy office in west Dade County as a money-laundering operation for drug smugglers.

On some days, the company laundered up to $3 million. Customers brought $1 million in sacks and suitcases during one visit.
