I Ouu United Press International MIAMI Police say the 22nd Avenue Players gang is no more, and residents of the Liberty City neighborhood where the youths raised havoc for months say they hope they're right.

Authorities said Wednesday 17 members of the 44-member group have been arrested and 11 of those have been convicted. Officers said the 44 members started by shaking down pedestrians and snatching purses last fall and graduated to armed robbery and attempted murder. "They're just a bunch of shorties 13, 14 and 15 years old," said one unidentified resident of the neighborhood. "But the crimes they were commit- ting, you'd think they were 28 or 30 years old pulling guns on people and stuff like that. "For a few months here, somebody was getting robbed walking down the street every weekend," said the resident.

"They were real bad kids, real violent. I'm glad to see the last of them." Not everybody is convinced the problem is solved for good. Eugene Carson, who runs the Caravan Market on the block where the gang originated, says it could happen again. "I don't think the problem is solved for good," Carson said. "Some of the older guys who were giving the younger ones direction are still out on the street.

But the situation sure is better." SALES SERVICE Disc Drives. Printers, Software. The 10-year mandatory prison term was handed down against Donald Raulerson of Fort Pierce. The FBI identifies him as the leader of a sophisticated drug trafficking ring in the "Operation Bancoshares" investigation.

After the sentencing, U.S. District Judge C. Clyde Atkins ordered Raulerson into the custody of the U.S. marshal. In the 21fc-year "sting" operation, undercover federal agents set up a bogus money laundering shop that handled more than $200 million for drug smugglers.

Raulerson pleaded guilty last year to federal charges of racketeering, importing marijuana and conspiracy to import marijuana. After his guilty plea, four other Operation. Bancoshares defendants were convicted of drug trafficking by a jury of nine men and three women. Ten other defendants in the case were found innocent by the jury. The FBI set up CRV Associates in a seedy office in west Dade County as a money-laundering operation for drug smugglers.

On some days, the company laundered up to $3 million. Customers brought $1 million in sacks and suitcases during one visit. Authorities said investigators seized more than $8 million from 58 accounts in 21 Miami banks at the end of the investigation. fi i ail I II II II I I I If If II 1 1 1 I I It II 1 II 1 ri I 1 DWI From C-1 ii i i in lirjiCrois $750 BACK ON FORD LARIAT PICKUPS $2000 BACK ON FORD XLT CLUB WAGON Match that if you can! lius said. "I'm sure you know any time I put someone in the county jail or state prison it's going to cause families some hardships. But if you sentence someone, it's for punishment." In a quivering voice, Mrs. Edge told Cornelius, "It was an accident, your honor." In January, a jury deliberated for two hours before convicting Edge. Ninety minutes after the crash, Edge's blood alcohol level was .30, indicating he had consumed the equivalent of 1 1 beers, according to Orange County Medical Examinar Thomas Hegert.

Legally, a person is considered intoxicated with a reading of .10. But evidence of Edge's alcohol level almost didn't make it into court. Two years ago, Cornelius refused to admit the information, ruling that troopers had taken the blood as part of their traffic investigation and not part of a homicide investigation. Under Florida law, information given during a traffic investigation is considered confidential so that witnesses can speak freely to police. Cornelius ruled that the trooper had not properly advised Edge that his blood was being taken as part of the homicide investigation and could be used in possible criminal charges.

The state appealed Cornelius' ruling. Last April, the 5th District Court of Appeal ruled that the judge erred in excluding the blood alcohol results. rCw-- 'X If -v p' 1 CASH BACK 100 FROM FORD ON ALL THESE TRUCKS AT EVERY FORD DEALER!
