High school bands to jazz things up at festival WEEKEND WINNERS FLEMIHGTOrJ Continued from Page B-1 said, and lots of "free ballons and lollipops and other treats all up and down the streets." The opening ceremony for the event, to be held at the Hunterdon County Courthouse at 10 a.m. Saturday, will include a flag-raising, singing of the national anthem and a balloon launch. At lunchtime, singing group Peggy and Gordon will entertain from the porch of the Union Hotel on Main Street Other entertainment takes place on Sunday. Three Bills and Change, a barbershop quartet, will perform from about noon to 2 p.m., strolling around Main Street, and the Flatterwheel Square-dancers will perform half-hour shows at 2 and 3 p.m. in front of the County Courthouse on Main Street A group called Puppet Zone will perform 30-minute puppet and magic shows each day at noon and 2 p.m.

The group will perform on Main Street at Weichert Realtors tomorrow, French Connections gourmet shop on Saturday and Round Valley Computers on Sunday. Throughout the three-day celebration, various community groups will sell such food as hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones and ice cream. Many groups will also set up information tables at various locations along Main Street. Six high school bands are scheduled to participate in the Evans Memorial Jazz Band Festival, tomorrow night at 7 at North Plain-field High School on Wilson Avenue. The annual event raises funds for scholarships that will be awarded to North Plainfield High School graduating seniors who have participated in the music program.

It is named for jazz pianist Bill Evans, who graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1946. Joining the North Plainfield High School band in the festival will be bands from Brick Memorial High School, Carteret High School, Dunel-len High School, Immaculata High School and J.P. Stevens High SchooL The featured guest is jazz pianist Keith MacDonald of Warren. The admission price is 3. Up in the stars Three films in the popular "Star Wars" series will be shown at the Plainfield Public Library as part of "Star Wars Saturday." "Star Wars" will be shown at 9:30 a.m., "The Empire Strikes Back" at 12:30 p.m.

and "The Return of the Jedi" at 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Plainfield Public Library and admission is free. In order to guarantee seating for the program, tickets can be picked up at the circulation desk of the library, West Eighth Street and Park Avenue. It's comical Collectors of all ages are invited to; buy, sell or trade at the Springfield Comic Book Show, taking place on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

at the Springfield Holiday Inn, 304 Route 22 West in Springfield. Thousands of old and new comic books and comic collectibles will be featured. Admission is $2. From sheep to shawl Demonstrations of sheep shearing, wool carding, spinning and weaving will be conducted as part of the "Sheep to Shawl Festival," Sunday at the Miller-Cory House Museum, 614 Mountain Ave. in Westfield.

Hand shears will be used to shear the sheep, as it would have been done in the 1700s. The fleece will then be teased and carded, and the wool will be spun, ready to be knitted or weaved. Costumed docents will be at the festival to answer questions about the museum, a restored 18th-century farmhouse. Snacks will be available and the Museum Shop will be open. The festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m.

A volunteer donation will be requested from visitors to the festival, which is a fund-raiser for the museum. The rain date is April 24. Mtttr-Corv House Museum photo The Miller-Cory House Museum's 'Sheep to Shawl Festival' will feature demonstrations of sheep shearing, wool carding, spinning and weaving on Sunday. most of which have been made by guild members, including a quilt that is being raffled at $1 a chance to benefit the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills. Other quilts will be offered for sale by vendors.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2.

A story on the quilt show and sale will appear in Saturday's 10th annual Hamfest and electronics, flea market Saturday at Hunterdon Central High School on Route 31 in Raritan Township. Forums will be offered on topics of special interest to amateur radio enthusiasts. Breakfast and lunch will be available. The event, sponsored by the Cher-ryville Repeater Association, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $4. For more information, call 788-2644.
