In Hillsborough, classrooms also were searched. Teachers and students were directed out of the rooms that were searched and told to leave coats, pocketbooks and backpacks behind while dogs were sent in. Investigators also searched students' cars. weren't aware the search was going to happen, were told to stay in their classrooms. Brennan said the sweep was not because there is a drug problem in the school, but as a preventive measure.

"We wanted to give notice to kids that we won't tolerate drug use," he said. In November, Hillsborough High School held the first drug sweep inside a Somerset County school. That sweep yielded a bong a pipe used to smoke marijuana, but no arrests. Hillsboro had complaints The two-hour Hillsborough sweep Superintendent Terrance Brennan said. Mays heads the church with Celina's aunt. He did not immediately return a telephone message left Friday at the church. According to court documents in Mount Holly municipal court, the church has been the center of a series of conflicts with neighbors and with relatives of members, who believe the church brainwashes its members. The records show church members live in crowded conditions and support the church by selling pretzels and Mary Kay Cosmetics. The church became involved in hostile municipal court proceedings after it accused the mothers of two female members and a group of their friends of trespassing at the church in 1994.

The mothers, Ora Mae Green and Linda Gleghorn, had been trying to get their daughters and grandchildren out of the church. Police have received several calls from the public regarding the case, but none of the information has led to her whereabouts, Sweeney said. Celina was reported missing Dec. 17; she was last seen about 1 1 p.m. Dec.

15, Sweeney said. The next morning, pillows were found stuffed under blankets on her bed. The family lost a bitter custody battle to Mays and they say he would not allow them any contact with the girl. Sweeney said he doesn't know if the custody battle is related to Celina's disappearance. "I think one side is blaming the other side and vice versa," he said.

"I'm not sure it has anything to do with it. We're certainly investigating that." The portrait of Celina's father also includes allegations of domestic abuse against her mother. Cram said her sister had to be counseled at Providence House in Willingboro, a shelter for abused women and their children. She said her sister was beaten by Mays various times. When asked, Sweeney said he was aware of domestic problems between Celina's mother and father.

Celina's half-brother, Bob Benaglio, of Dryden, said he spoke to the girl briefly before she disappeared. He said she couldn't speak to him because her father was in the background telling her to get off the phone. Benaglio said he told Celina to give him a sign she was unhappy living with her father by pushing a button on the telephone. He said his heart broke when he heard a beep. TRENTON (AP) A simmering family feud and dissension in a church congregation are adding to the intrigue surrounding the disappearance last month of a 12-year-old Willingboro girl who was nine months pregnant when she vanished from her home.

Celina Janette Mays remains the object of an intensive missing persons' search. "I think she is alive," said Willingboro Police Detective John Sweeney, who said he has been working on the case for about 16 hours a day. "I'm very hopeful that we will locate her." But Celina's maternal aunt isn't that optimistic. "I don't think she's alive." said Cindy Cram, of Tampa, Fla. She said she thinks members of the church that Celina's family runs "did away with her." Sweeney said the investigation hinges on who impregnated Celina.

But extensive interviews with her family and members of The Gospel of Christ Church in Mount Holly have yet to reveal the baby's father. Family members said Celina never disclosed who fathered her child. Police are not ruling out several male church members who lived in a house on Crestview Drive in Willingboro where Celina lived with her father. They are also interviewing those who PCWER temps 1 0S Union Av. Her cousin, Sean Smith, has been interviewed, Sweeney said. The 23-year-old man is the son of the Rev. Cerita G. Smith, the founder of the Gospel of Christ Ministries and pastor of the church. But relatives of Celina's mother, Lynn Vitale, believe her father was involved in her disappearance and possibly her pregnancy.

Celina's father, Crezonzo "C.J." Mays, has said he had a vasectomy and has documents to prove it. Police are examining those, Sweeney said. Mays said the mother's relatives have always hated him because he is black and they are white. Cram said her side of the family has not seen Celina since her mother died 2 12 years ago because they do not get along with the girl's father.
