Programs help promote environmental education TOMMIE BERGER fisheries biologist,i Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Every year, fisheries biologists get involved in lots of programs educating the public about what goes on in the great outdoors. We put on programs for Earth Day, EcoMeet, Envirothon, fishing clinics, fishing information nights. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, various schools, civic groups, etc. Most of these programs have to do with environmental education of some sort, either fisheries management, ^ aquatic ecology, or simply how to catch fish. April and May are the months when school is winding down for most elementary, middle school, and high school students and it's when lots of teachers plan field trips. The warm spring weather invites everyone to enjoy the out-of-doors and the youngsters are eager to get outside the confines of the classroom. And really, the outdoors is probably the best classroom of all for hands-on experiences and getting a feel for the environment around us. This week there are several Earth Day events planned for the area. Earth Day is an event that has been going on for over 20 years now. It was set up to promote an awareness of our environment and to promote things like partici pation in outdoor activities, recycling, planting trees, and other activities that promote environmental quality Wildlife and Parks staff at Wilson Lake have been conducting Earth Day programs for quite a few years now. Seven local schools are planning to send their 5th graders to an Earth Day program at Wilson Lake on Wednesday, April 18. There will be 8 stations set up and school groups will rotate through each station during the day. There are two stations on the Dakota Trail in the State Park and stations on Skins & Skulls, Endangered Animals, Trees, Recycling, Fish ID and Management and Water Safety A number of Wildlife and Parks employees will be involved as well as the Corp of Engineers, Kansas Forest Service, and Lori Hall from Rolling Hill Refuge. The Saiina Recreation Commission also has Earth Day events planned in Saiina Thursday and Friday They have a number of schools lined up to send third graders to Lakewood Park and the Friendship Center for some outdoor education. There will be a number of programs included on the agenda to make the youngsters aware of our Earth and the impact people have upon it. They are stressing hands on opportunities and have a number of agencies involved, including Wildlife and Parks. Later on in April and May there are other programs scheduled. Hays Junior High will be sending its seventh graders to Wilson for a Field Day in the State Park. I will be assisting with a fisheries program for that group. I have been asked to assist several schools with EcoMeet training that is coming up this month. I will be participating in a 4-H Shooting Sports program on one weekend and instructing in the Women in the Outdoors program another weekend. Fishing clinics start in May and really pick up after school is out in June. We have a meeting shortly to set up our next 4-H Sportfishing workshop, too. I just returned from a National Wildlife Federation annual meeting in Washington D.C. We attended an educational workshop where the Federation outlined a number of their programs including their Backyard Habitat program, their Habitat Stewards program, and their teacher education programs. It reminded me of some of the programs that the Kansas Wildlife Federation provides: Outdoor Adventure Camp for lO-to-12-year olds in July and ; Hunting, Fishing, and Furharvesting School for 13- ; to-18-year-olds in October. These programs are really hands-on programs with a real outdoor flavor. There are a lot of programs offered by various organizations that provide environmental education. Some are for youngsters, others for adults, some for schools, and other for civic groups. Keep an eye open for those opportunities and get involved. You just might learn something new and exciting.
