'When you feel that piece of cake calling your name, you learn to turn away from the cake and go to the Ivamarie Kelley High Bridge Pastor Ron Kelley and his wife, Ivamarie, are eating differently these days. Candy bars that were once consumed in a few minutes, are now enjoyed in segments over several days. Large servings from restaurants that used to be eaten in one sitting, are now split up and brought home as a second meal.

Desserts that customarily followed large quantities of fare, are now saved as a subsequent snack. This couple, which had tried practically every diet known to man, has finally found a way to control their overeating by simply obeying God. Helping them do this is The Weight Down Workshop, a 12-week Christ-centered weight reduction program based in churches. The program consists of Bible study, workbooks, videos and audio cassettes to help break the desire to overeat by focusing on God, rather than food. "We teach you to replace your relationship with food with a relationship with Christ," says Gwen Shamblin, M.S., R.D., of Cookeville, who founded and directs the workshops.

It was in 1986, when Shamblin was studing nutrition at Memphis State University, that she began to realize that spiritual hunger is often the root i I H'Zr: For further information Presently, there are more than 10 workshops throughout New Jersey, including Clinton and Whitehouse Station. Principles of the program have successfully been applied to successfully overcome other problems such as anorexia, bulimia, nail-biting, compulsive shopping and more. Total cost of the 12 week program, including workbook and audio tapes is $105. The second session is only $55. Currently, the program is taking place in more than 2,000 churches across this country alone. It was an article covering the success of Weight Down in last November's "Woman's Day" magazine that caught Ivamarie's eye and she decided it was worth a try. She liked the idea that there were no scales, no diets or menus and no exercise other than "getting on your knees and praying," she says. "When you feel that piece of cake calling your name, you learn to turn away from the cake and go to the Lord," says Ivamarie who with her husband, is currently running a workshop at High Bridge Reformed Church. There are 13 participants in the group which has a variety of denominational backgrounds (Catholic, Baptist, Reformed, "Mainly, it's learning how to eat," explains Ivamarie.

"That sounds like something we should know from childhood, but we don't." "The Weight Down Workshop designs yourself to listen to your body," adds Pastor Kelley. "Since you can eat anything you want, there are no rules to focus on, just God." Tummy vs. head The group is about halfway through the program and has lost nearly 100 pounds all together. A 50-year-old woman from Glen Gardner, is pleased with her success in the program, both physically and spiritually, and looks forward to the meetings each week. "With other meetings, I wanted to get in and out real quick or not go at all," she explains of other attempted programs.

"But I look forward to the Weight Down Workshop meetings each Thursday. With other diets, there's such a concentration on the food, but this time the concentration is on what we feel." cause of overeating. "A lot of people walk in feeling angry at God because they're overweight," says Shamblin. "But this is not a God who put bacon and chocolate on this earth to torture us The trick is not to be enslaved by food." Weekly videos Shamblin's Weight Down Program is geared around weekly videos that are watched by the groups at each session and discussed. These videos are the focal point of the program, which help reiterate Weight Down's doctrine each week: Head hunger the urge to eat when the body is not calling for it is not true physiological hunger, but rather spiritual hunger.

Traditional diets preoccupy a person with food what to eat and what not to eat rather than on the root cause of why we eat. Gluttony is a sin, and overeating is like praying to a false god called food. It is possible to lose weight without following dietary rules (such as eating low-fat, high-fiber, or low-calorie "diet" foods) because the food content isn't what needs to change, you are. with obedience, and it feels great," adds the Glen Gardner woman of her submission to God's will. "We're not doing this to draw people into church necessarily," says Pastor Kelley. "We're just giving people the opportunity to learn about themselves and redefine their eating This is a refreshing, welcomed approach to many who have tried various other programs and diets. "This is not a diet," says a 56-year-old woman from High Bridge and current workshop participant. "You're simply learning how to know the difference of when your head is hungry and your tummy is hungry, there's a difference." Both women say it's the obedience to God that motivates them to do well with the program.

"The whole purpose is not taking off the weight, although it is a plus, but it's replacing that head, hunger habits and their figures. If it brings them closer to God, that's great."
