BY BAUGH ELECTRIC ER0009420 RA0O60075 343-7777 A thin, stooped man, the fruit picker said he lives alone and usually gets by during fruit season. Now his only income is $260 a month from Social Security, plus whatever he can get from odd jobs. Marian Westerfield at the Leesburg Food Bank listened to the man's story, filled out an information card and gave him a three-day bag of food. "If they come in here, they really need the food," said Westerfield, 76, a veteran volunteer at food banks here and in her home state of Rhode Island. "We usually don't turn anybody away.

"You can usually tell when they are playing around with you," Westerfield said." One woman came in to the Leesburg Food Bank looking for food, clothing and cookware. Although the woman was out of work, her housemate was earning about $740 a month. "I just can't send them away without any food," Westerfield said, looking chagrined. She and the other volunteers believe most people who come in are truly in need. The pleasure the volunteers get comes from doing something directly to help someone.

"I work the desk sometimes," 62-year-old Delores Barrett said, referring to the screening office. "It really breaks my heart and sometimes my purse. "I remember one man and his son walked seven miles in the rain to get here. "He didn't have a way back, so we got together to get some money up for a taxi." FOOD from 1 pects to see her caseload triple. In the first four months of this year, she has given free food to 828 families.

She served 1,200 in 1990. "It's very frightening to see this happen," Gengler said. At St. Paul's Catholic Church in Leesburg, Pastora Massad helped 1,836 people during the first four months of" last year. Through April this year, she served 2,476 people.

At the Leesburg Food Bank, Harriette Mann said she served about 1,500 during the first three months of this year. She doesn't have last year's figures, but she estimates that the caseload is much higher this year. Statewide, the construction and manufacturing industries have been hit hardest by the recession, a pattern that probably holds for Lake County, said Sue Patterson, an analyst with the Florida Department of Labor. For people in those categories, joblessness magnifies routine problems. Pam, the Lady Lake construction worker, can vouch for that.

"We usually do all right," she said. Lately, however, she's had a run of bad luck. Two months ago, her husband, who also is in construction, fell off a ladder and still suffers from a back problem. She hopes he can return to work in another month. This month, she lost her food stamps because she didn't report the part-time cab driving job, she said.

She has reapplied but still awaits an answer. The phone company recently disconnected her phone, and her car blew a motor. Her part-time cab driving job helps some, but not much. Earlier, a 65-year-old fruit picker from Mount Dora also needed food to tide him over. The center is one of the few in the nation specializing in treating autistic students with severe behavioral problems. Autism is a state of mind characterized by a disregard for external reality. Harlow Middleton, an attorney for the school, said the expansion would have well-landscaped portable classrooms, dormitories and office space. He said he was aware of opposition from some property owners but said they may have misconceptions. Most people expect the school to be a two-story concrete building with bars on the windows, he said.

"But it's not like that; it looks like a resort," Middleton said. "We like the country, the bucolic nature of the area. It's good for the students." Bonifay said the land around the lake, which is vacant or used for agriculture, is best suited for development as large-lot, single residences. She said the school would be too intensive a use for the area and too intrusive. Three years ago, property owners fought the rezoning for the original school site and now are fighting to keep it from expanding, she said.

"It was bad before; this just makes it worse," Bonifay said. Property owners are concerned about the effect on the lake, increased traffic and decreased property values if the school expands, she said. At the Mount Dora campus, Au Clair offers a 24-hour, year-round program designed to promote independence and help students return to a normal community lifestyle. The Mount Dora school has a staff of 75 for its 48 students. The original Au Clair program for autistic students began in 1969 on a 10-acre site south of Wilmington.

Au Clair has a campus on 200 acres of farmland near the Delaware-Maryland border. Middleton said the Au Clair program has focused on behavior problems that need the most restrictive care students who have to be watched around the clock and those who can manage only limited group activities. He said the expansion would allow them to work with students ready for less restrictive care, who are ready to be taught independent living skills and can live in a roup environment.
