"Hell and High Water" showcases Ross (George Clooney) who, if you saw last week's episode, has "more or less reached the end of his rope both personally and profession-: ally. I After a job interview at a quiet pedi-; atric practice he plans to join, Ross i encounters a young boy caught in a storm drain during a torrential down-; i pour. The boy is freed in breathtaking fashion, but not before his heart stops i beating. Ross commandeers a TV- news helicopter to rush the victim to i County ER. I've always graded this series for 1 story and A for action.

This episode I rates A-plus for action. And a strong I secondary story about a young hit-and-; run victim gives the hour added emo-; tional punch. It's another strong Thursday for NBC. On "The Single Guy" at 8:30, Julia Louis-Dreyfus guest stars "3s Jonathan's (Jonathan Silverman) -latest girlfriend. And on "Caroline in ffle City" at 9:30, Jean Stapleton 4n the shows up as Caroline's TTLea Thompson) mother.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer James Woods, right, and Bruce Dern star as nemeses in a winner-take-all bet in the 1992 comedy tonight at 10:05 on TBS. Louis Gossett Jr. also stars. Highlights Maybe there are enough hard-core "Columbo" fans to give the network a respectable rating opposite NBC's killer lineup. Faye Dunaway and Claudia Christian guest star as women with equal motives to kill a ruthless gambler (Armando Pucci).

"New York News," CBS at 9: The rap on this newspaper drama is that it lacks originality and tonight is an example. The Unabomber obviously inspired this script about a serial bomber (referred to as the who says he'll strike again if the newspaper doesn't publish his "48 Hours," CBS at 10: A fluffy hour is built around a visit to the set of "A Time to Kill," the big screen adaptation of John Grisham's novel being shot in Mississippi. "Murder One," ABC at 10: Hoffman (Daniel Benzali) discovers that Avedon (Jason Gedrick) may have confessed to the murder of Jessica Costel-lo, but his client still can't remember anything; Louis (John Fleck) finds out who on the staff has been leaking information to a tabloid TV show. Cable calls "Knight Rider 2000" (1991), USA at 8: Attention "Baywatch" fans. David Hasselhoff made this movie after the demise of his 1982-86 NBC action series.

The hunky hero peels off in his high-tech car KITT (William Daniels provides the computer's voice) to take on bad cops and gunrunners. "The Onion Field" (1979), MAX at 8: Police drama doesn't come much better than this suspenseful, well-acted story of a young cop (John Savage) who loses it after witnessing his partner's murder. James Woods, Ronny Cox and Ted Danson co-star. "Diggstown" (1992), TBS at 10:05: James Woods and Louis Gossett Jr. are paired in this disappointing comedy-drama about a con man (Woods) and a boxer (Gossett Jr.) who set out to scam the creep who runs a small Georgia town (Bruce Dern).

The bet: That the boxer can out-punch 10 opponents in 24 hours. Oliver Piatt is a bright spot as Woods' sidekick. Tonight's talk The Tonight Show: Actor-comedian Jim Carrey and singer Tom Jones. 11:35 p.m.,Ch. 4, 10.

"Living Single," FOX at 8: A cleverly written script finds Overton (John Henton) with the chance to win $10,000 on the basketball court by sinking a three-pointer. In practice, he can't miss except when Synclaire (Kim Coles) is around. NBA star Alonzo Mourning guest stars.

Part of the show was shot prior to a game between the Phoenix Suns and the L.A. Clippers. "Friends," NBC at 8: All fans need to know about this half-hour is its title: "The One Where Ross Finds Out." But you have to tune in to find what happens between star-crossed friends Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). "Columbo: It's All in the Game" (1993), ABC at 8: It's no mystery why ABC would be repeating a two-year-old movie in November sweeps. WORLD SAVINGS The woman summons the prof's three bickering children and his twin brother to rural Connecticut for the funeral. Their dealings are witnessed by Alice's former brother-in-law, a well-intentioned, good-natured man. He is the outsider who tries hard to be nice to everyone.

Of course, he won't succeed. Nelson has a sharp ear for the humor and high drama in difficult family relationships. The outwardly genteel children, two daughters and a son, are an unpleasant trio, particularly the younger daughter, whose nastiness bubbles over on more than one occasion. Mia Dillon perfectly captures her icy politeness and the anger underneath it. Alice, the dead man's lover, is the play's most fully realized character.

She's funny and sad capable of caustic remarks before lapsing into unbearable grief. It's no wonder Penny Fuller gives the evening's most commanding performance as the take-charge mistress. The playwright depicts with deadly accuracy the condescension of his characters toward their adopted country. They make fun of Americans their accents, their friendliness, their lack of cultural awareness. And yet you get the sense that they would miss these things if they were forced to live in England again.

Director Howard Davies has put together an uneven production. Accents waver. Several actors resort to shrillness or broad comedy when subtlety would be the more appropriate and British way. Nelson's careful, almost overly precise writing demands nothing less. The production designs are impeccable.

Designer Santo Loquasto's rustic country home, all wooden beams and bookcases, is particularly inviting. So is the play. "New England," at a brief 90 minutes, is an acute, observant look at the gap between Britain and the United States, despite their "special relationship." It's a gap that, at times, can seem vaster than the ocean that separates the two countries. By MICHAEL KUCHWARA Associated Press NEW YORK "New England," Richard Nelson's bemused, biting look at British expatriates in the United States, begins with a suicide and ends with guests gathering for the dead man's memorial service. The remembrances and recriminations that occur in between form the heart of this elegaic comedy-drama about Anglo-American differences that opened Tuesday at off-Broadway's Manhattan Theater Club.

Nelson, an American playwright whose works have been showcased extensively by the Royal Shakespeare Company, is something of an expert on those differences. The author examined the other side of the coin in "Some Americans Abroad," an equally jaundiced view of his fellow countrymen's love affair with all things English. In "New England," the Brits are mostly relatives of the dead man. a music professor who shoots himself in front of his mistress, Alice.
