The Salina Journal Wednesday, January 15,1986 Page? Movie star Donna Reed dies By The New York Timeg NEW YORK Donna Reed, 64, the Academy Award-winning actress who starred in more than 40 movies and portrayed the quintessential mother and wife of CAKES FOR ANY OCCASION \Vir also linvc napkins. plnlrs. lialliiiins. [•oshimi's, delivers . gifls >M|SS HISS. 9th 827-1379 Middle America on television's "Donna Reed Show" in the 1950s and '60s, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif. Reed had entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in December for treatment of a bleeding ulcer. The malignancy was discovered during tests for the ulcer. In the Hollywood of the late 1940s, the name Donna Reed represented the perennial ingenue, a symbol of gentle femininity, just as the name Jimmy Stewart was shorthand for the slightly befuddled but noble American male. It was with Stewart, in fact, that Reed made one of Hollywood's most lastingly popular films, Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," released in 1946. In 1953, Reed strayed from her typecasting to play a "hostess" in a club for soldiers in the 1953 film version of "From Here to Eternity." But perhaps she is most widely remembered as the star of "The Donna Reed Show," which ran as a weekly television comedy series on ABC from 1958 through 1966. On the program, she played the wife of a pediatrician in the small town of Hilldale. She steadily confronted and overcame problems such as measles, poor report cards, teenage dating and the white lies told by loving spouses. The program, produced by her second husband, Tony Owen, was one of the more successful of many family situation comedies on the air. In her.most recent major role on television, Reed in 1984 joined the cast of "Dallas," the CBS series, taking over the part of the Ewing clan's matriarch, Miss Ellie, after the actress Barbara Bel Geddes became ill. Campaign won't pit ex-spouses against each other ELGIN, 111. (AP) - Republican voters in the Elgin area won't have to decide between Zwicks running for the Illinois Legislature. State Rep. Jill Zwick, a Republican, said Monday she has withdrawn her bid for re-election, and endorsed her ex-husband, Morton, in his Republican primary race for her 65th District House seat from Kane and McHenry Counties. Zwick, 41, said she wanted to spend more time with her four children, age 7 to 15. She shares custody of the children with her ex-husband, a 47- year-old pork bellies trader on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Zwick, who has served in the General Assembly since 1981, said she found herself in a race with three challengers and couldn't justify three months away from her children while she campaigned for the March primary. "Mort has the same views as I do, and he has worked for my election in the past," she said in explaining her endorsement. The Zwicks were divorced in May 1984 after 16 years of marriage. Zwick faces two other GOP candidates, Edward Armstrong of Fox River Grove and Deloris Doederlein of East Dundee.
