So says Merie Earle, who fits that description and who can be seen this summer in the supporting cast of "The Jerry Reed When You'r Hot You're Hot Hour," seen Tuesdays. On the Reed series Mrs. Earle appears in the guise of Martha Washington Dixie, a songwriting super-patriot Mrs. Earle, who has appeared in three motion pictures and a good number of television commercials and series episodes, says there's no shortage of little-old-lady ac school.

The principal had called to see if someone could come out and talk to the students, and Heshimu and David Jolliffe, who plays Bernie, volunteered their services. The results were so good that the word got around to other schools and Heshimu got more invitations. Diane Zimmerman, student activities coordinator of Henry Clay Junior High School in south central Los Angeles, was one who found the visit a great help to her students. "We had task forces of business men come and talk to the students, but the results were never as dynamic as with personalities," Mrs. Zimmerman said.

CO VI NO tresses in Hollywood. Whenever she reports for an audition, I I just didn't get it all together this morning." There were snickers from a few of the students. He dragged some typewritten notes from his back pocket and glanced over them. "Listen, I heard some of you have some trouble getting into reading. Be cool! You'll get the hang of it.

That's my message. So let's just rap." The students began to laugh. They accepted him as their friend. A few rose with questions. He repeated each question so the other students could hear it, then answered.

"The girl asked if I was married." a giggle went up among the girls in the audience. "WELL, NOW, my mama told me when I was very young he paused as the whole group broke out into loud laughter. Jason-Heshimu Cumbuka-Arlingtoh Banks was into his -pitch to more black, brown and white students to stay in school. Heshimu started meeting with the high school students during his first year on "Room 222." A problem had developed at a Pomona high "I've got a message for you! Don't get so uptight! Hang loose and that's cool." The speaker was Heshimu Cumbuka, who plays Jason, the outspoken rebel of "Room 222." His audience was 240 students of Maclay Junior High School in Pacoima, an oversized minority-dominated school with inner city problems. As the antagonistic and caustic member of the class in the television series, Jason has become a hero to many students.

"He tells it like it is," says Heshimu of the character. Heshimu was given his Swahili name, which means respected young warrior, by his fellow actors and instructors at a theater workshop. As Arlington Banks, he had atteded Washington High School in Los Angeles, a black-dominated school in south central Los Angeles. THE KIDS AT Maclay were quiet when Heshimu arrived. There was no applause.

He was there to talk to them, but they weren't buying until they heard him. "Sorry I was late, but I got back into town late last night. she meets plenty ot tnem. ane even met one oiaer man herself, an 86-year-old woman. And some of them tend to become sarcastic when they learn that Mrs.

Earle donned professional greasepaint for the first time only six years ago. "They're old-timers in show business, so they just kind of snort and recite all their Broadway credits and film credits and things like that," says Mrs. Earle. "That doesn't bother me, though, and sometimes I even beat them out for the parts. But if I don't that doesn't bother me too much, either.

It doesn't take much money for me to live, anyway." Mrs. Earle admits she hasn't had any dramatic training except for a smattering of experience in amateur theatricals. As for her acting style, she says, "Oh, dear, I guess I don't have any. All I try to do is just to be myself." Mrs. Earle is a widow, lives by herself wherever she has to go.
