Wichita Sept. 26-28 Dole Will Speak at League Meet Sen. Robert Dole will be the featured speaker at the annual banquet of the Kansas League of Municipalities, as over 700 city officials gather for the league's three day convention in Wichita Sept. 26-28. Dole, Republican Party national chairman, will be one of three political figures present. Sen. Glee Smith, president pro tem of the state senate, and Sen. Harold Herd, Coldwater, state senate minority leader and gubernatorial candidate, will also address general sessions. The three day event begins Sunday, Sept. 26, and will be presided over by Mayor Roger Williams, Russell, president of the league. Speakers from federal and state governmental agents, and city officials from throughout the state will contribute to the program. In addition to the general sessions, there will be meetings of professional organizations Involved with city government. Hutchinson's voting delegates at the convention will be commissioners Ken Keast and Jim Martinez, with City Manager George Pyle and Mayor David Mackey to serve as alternates. The city also will be well-represented at the organizational level. Hutchinson is the only city that has the presidents of three of the municipal-oriented organizations. City Engineer Herman Bunte serves as president of the Kansas Association of Municipal Engineers, Police Chief Bob Adams is president of the Kansas Association of Police Chiefs and Richard Hansen, director of planning, is president of the Kansas Planning Association. They will preside over meetings of their respective groups during split sessions. Southwest Kansas cities will also be well represented. In addition to Williams, Liberal Mayor Merle W. Staats will preside over one general session and Larned City Attorney Vincent G. Fleming will lead a discussion of legal problems at the Municipal Legal Meeting. Joseph A. Levin, Lindsborg, president of the Traffic and Municipal Judge's Association, will preside at that group's session and Mayor Robert Parrish, Grea,t Bend, will address a general session on the tax lid. And, as Williams noted in his official invitation to the convention, Dole is also from Russell. Little Champ for The Second Year SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP)Nine-year-old Robert Sato has become the Junior Checker Champ of Sacramento for the second year in a row. "It's just an everyday tiling now," he said after he walked away with the top spot in the 12-years-and-under class of the tournament sponsored by the Recreation and Parks Department. "I just do it, man." Robert said ha learned checkers from his father, an Army Depot employe. He said he hoped to spend tlie future, "just winning games one by one, and maybe two by two."
