Syffende Mai's a fun feast Ar ea church services By CALE DICKEY Area Editor V1NING My only compaint aboul being invited to Syttende Mai at Folden Lutheran Church is that Mrs. Philip Rakstad didn't warn me about what I was getting into. What I got into was lefse, a a fattigman, flat bread and meat balls, meat balls and meat forcing me to pass up vegetables, pickles, potatoes, gravy, cookies and rolls. The bride kept nagging me to ease up on the meat but I paid no heed as it was obvious the supply was inexhaustible. I'd managed quite well to this point but hadn't reckoned with the wiles of Mrs.

Edwin Gaustav, who's been quietly observing my selectivity of delicacies. Gently she suggested, "Try the fruit soup, you'll like it." The familiar words proved prophetic I liked it. Someone, incautiously, left the fattigman within reach and I made visible effort to have my portions of each come put even. The bride solved my immediate problem with a none-too-genlly applied elbow to my ribs. That fruit soup was luscious prunes and raisins surrounded with large tapioca and bits and pieces of stick cinnamon and embellished, Mrs.

Gaustav said, "with seasonings suiting the in- dividual's AnJ so il is, that at long last I've had soup for dessert. The Foiden ALCW, 20 members strong, are looking forward to their 15th annual Syttende Mai feast, next May 17. "We'll be holding it on the 17th from now on," Mrs. Helmer Rakstad said, "and not on the closest convenient Saturday as before." Knowing that Syttende Mai is the Norwegian's "in- dependence denoting freedom from Sweden's rule, I'd half expected a bit of old time stump oratory recounting the heroics. But nary an exploit was mentioned.

Cautiously I broached the matter to Mrs. Helmer Rakstad to learn that "it was way long ago and our purpose in celebrating Norwegian in- dependence day is to serve a supper in honor of the pioneers who came here and started a congregation in 1882." Mrs. Truman Gunderson wore SteVe hDSOn feasted not BIBLES DEVOTIONAL BOOKS Brides'VWte Bibles Wedding Books Fergus Falls Wadding Announcements Silver and Golden Anniversary Books Mrs. Gilbert Lovro, left, and traditional apparel Mrs. Steve Johnson was a bit more forthright, "What really happened is that the Nor- wegians have been marrying Swedes." And it would be a shame to have a celebration feast, as prepared by the Folden ALCW, wind up in a family row.

So maybe one or two stalwart Norwegians might have mentioned Syttende Mai's origin carefully out of earshot of Swede eavesdrop- pers. Mrs. Gaustav recalled making flat bread. "When I was just a little girl my mother made me learn how to make it. We had a wood burning stove and baked it on the stove lids.

Now there's nothing to it, 'cause they use an oven." The ALCW members working in the dining hall contributed much to the gala atmosphere with their traditional And so adept were they at dispensing food and squeezing between the rows of diners, that at the evening's end their costumes were unwrinkled and still spotless. "That's what 14 years of practice will do for you," one said. The ALCW uses Syttende Mai funds on a "matching 50-50 vuwwvuwwvwww WHITE DRUG STORE Will Be The Only Drug Store OPEN SUNDAY basis with Folden church im- provements or projects," Mrs. Helmer Rakstad said, "with our last project being running water." Today's ALCW is an offshoot of the "Ladies Aid" organized by the pioneer women who conducted their affairs in Norwegian. In 1939 the Rev.

J. L. Drage suggested forming the ALCW as an English language organization because so few of the Aid members were fluent in Norwegian. The ALCW meets monthly for Bible study and a program with the offering divided between the general fund and the sponsorship of Missionary Otto Tollefson in Brazil. "Throughout the year we assist the congregation by contributing to various causes where there is need, locally and throughout the world," Mrs.

Helmer Rakstad said. And so it was that I attended my first Syttende Mai along with about 300 others from an area ex- tending from Alexandria to Bemidji. "We have people that haven't missed a one of these dinners." Mrs. Philip Rakstad said, "and there are quite a few from the Twin Cities that always spend this weekend at their cottages so they won't' miss our celebration," And the next Syttende Mai celebration I attend, I'm going to eat my fruit soup as the first course BANK ELECTS PRIEST NEW YORK (AP) Chase Manhattan Bank chairman Da- vid Rockefeller has announced that a leading Catholic church- man has been elected to the bank's board of directors. Daily journal June 2, 1972 6 Teacher agreement is reached CHICAGO (AP) Chicago public school teachers have ac- cepted the last-minute settle- ment that forestalled their strike last week. The approximately 3-1 vote Thursday ratified an agreement reached by leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Board of Education. The teachers originally had voted to strike May 22.

The agreement stipulates that the school year will end June 16, five days before the normal closing date, instead of the 11 days early the board scheduled. Under the agreement, the board will attempt to restore 500 teaching and civil service positions it had planned to cut. The positions will be eliminated next December, however, un- less new state funds become available. Both the early closing and the elimination of the positions were planned by the school board in an effort to reduce an expected fiscal deficit. WOMAN POWER CHICAGO A i Bishop Ralph T.
