12B Fort Myers News-Press, Sunday. January 9, 1983 Genius beats system for quarter-a-day HOLLYWOOD. Fla. (AP) Bill Mitchell Jr., a 17-year-old videogames genius who scored a world record 25 million points on the Centipede computer game, needs only a quarter a day to practice his sometimes expensive habit. "I just play one game all evening," Mitchell said. "I never play a game a lot unless I'm really serious about It. Every time I sit down I'm playing tor a world record." He cracks codes, to the dismay of programmers who then have to devise a new game to keep people from playing all night on a single quarter. "You've got to realize these are computers and everything happens for a reason," Mitchell said. If by luck or accident or diligence you discover a quirk in the program, you can beat the machine at its own game, he said. Mitchell was invited to compete with 17 other video geniuses this weekend, but had to miss the Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was $200 short. "I had $100 of my own money," he said. "But I needed $300 for the air fare. I couldn't find a sponsor." The Chaminade High School senior said he didn't expect to win the contest anyway. "Records get bro ken every day," he said with a shrug. Mitchell first caught attention when he mastered -Centipede, , a game of shoot-'em-up involving a marching worm, bouncing spiders, a frustrating flea and a gang of mushrooms. The average player is lucky to score 100,000 points on Centipede. Mitchell racked up a world-record 25 million in a 47-hour session in front of the machine located in the bar his father owns. He stopped because he had to stop to go to school. Mitchell also claims the world's second-highest score on Donkey Kong, fourth-highest on Pac-Man MMk ass till gffiBB 3 .JUl You wouldn't think of trying a 200 yard drive with a putter. He spent $20 a week last summer, practicing six hours a day. Mitchell has his own theory about public criticism of video games. "The older generation doesn't like being second best to the younger generation in anything. And the younger generation just chews them up on video games." THE MODEL HUNT 15 ON!
