BRANDSTAOT TV viewers to see 5th Dimension special tonight By RICK DU BROW HOIXVWOOD (UPI) The singing group called the 5th Dimension has its' first television special tonight in a sort of "Wizard of Oz" format employing the settings of liontempora- ry artist-designer Peter Max. And if the comedy writers had been up to the task, the CBS-TV hour, "The 5th Dimension Special: An Odyssey in the Cosmic Universe of- Peter Max," might have been something really special.

They weren't, however. And the program, previewed by this writer under CBS-TV's welcome new policy of allowing advance criticism, turns out to be highly erratic as a result. The 5th Dimension sings well enough, of course, to please its fans. And.though the members of the group don't show much of a flair for for that matter, does Mr. Max, who is also on is enough guest talent to have handled the matter: Flip Wilson, Arte Johnson, Glen Campbell and Joey Heatherton.

These guests play the various characters the 5th Dimension meets on its picturesque odyssey, much as in "The Wizard of Oz" Judy' Garland came across comic types portrayed Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (the Tin Man), RayBoJger (the Scarecrow) and. Frank Morgan (the Wizard). But there the comparison stops. In tonight's entry; Wilson is pretty funny anyway because he simply Jus a strong comic presence. Johnson has a few moments.

Campbell's comedy attempts heed severe directing control. And Miss Heatherton, this generation's Janis Paige, gives the impression nothing excites her. anymore. Good old never happened with her. striking visual effects between animation and reality, and appropriately the best part of the hour.

Writing problems also handicapped the debut' Wednesday night of British singer-comedian Des O'Connor as summer host of NBC-TV's "Kraft Music Hall." And the guest lineup of Elke Sommer, Robert Morse, Liberace and Teresa Graves simply bad. to make-do with the sub-par material The program was taped in London. British attempts' to imitate American musical-variety outings are usually lightweight. And that is the word that must be used to describe the amiable O'Connor. The hour did, however, have one act that was marvelous and will be featured regularly: the MacGregor brothers, a comedy foursome of middle-aged men in kilts who are neither- Scottish for that matter, brothers.

They are, in Chinese, ah Australian, a' Nigerian and an Englishman. They more or less sing, and more or less mess around, moving with exquisite inelegance. One of them is a tiny fellow who kept staring angrily at O'Connor during a song: They are one of the funniest acts I have ever seen. Ah, well. And then we have ABC-TVs half-hour Wednesday night comedy, special with the Canadian team of Wayne and Shuster, who, in skits, spoofed love through the ages.

I confess I have never understood is funny about Wayne and Shuster. And their latest concoction, hokey and tired, simply furthers the mystery. ABC-TV also had a Wednesday night hour called "Mission care for a nation," about pollution. Well- mounted and well-intentioned, of course, but just more of the same on the subject. What is spondylitis of a vertebral segment? Will it get worse in time? A This is a chronic rheumatoid or tubercular arthritis of the spine. It usually results in a bent-over posture. As a rule, the disease is progresive and requires expert management by a team consisting of a rheumatologist, physiotherapist and an orthopedist: For 10 months I have had a severe pain is my coccyx whenever I get up from a sitting position. It doesn't bother me when I walk or stand. My doctor calls it coccydyrtia.

X-rays showed nothing wrong. Could this be cancer? Do you know of any cure? A Coccdynia is pain at the lower-end of-the spine. In the absence of any X-ray evidence of a tumor, it is not a cancer. Your doctor should try to find and remove the cause. For temporary relief, take aspirin and use a heating pad.

Various ways of getting attention By DICK WEST WASHINGTON (UPI) of the local pundits are saying that the White House staff has created a communications gap within the administration by "protecting" PresJdebt Nixon from his Cabinet. That sort of thing, if it be true, is nothing new, of course At some point during almost every administration, members of the Cabinet begin to feel isolated from the President When this happens, Cabinet members occasionally resort to various strategems to try to get the President's attention. One favorite maneuver is the leak technique.

A Cabinet member will write a private memo to the President But being fairly certain that it will be intercepted by the White House staff, he will leak a copy to the press is the hope that the resulting headline win catch the President's eye. Or, if the Cabinet member is really desperate, he might Court hears recount of six murders Boy arrested with heavy explosives CHTNO son of a civilian underwater demolition expert was arrested by police Tuesday when they found bim experimenting with, enough explosives to blow up eight city blocks. Heavy toll in heat wave in India NEW DELHI (UPI) A heat wave with temperatures up to 120 degrees entered its third week today in north India where newspapers estimated more than 1,000 persons have died from its effects.

In extreme cases, a Cabinet member might even use his wife as an attention-getter.

For example, he might have her telephone a newspaper at 2 a.m., or something of that nature. And if nothing else works, Cabinet members, knowing that the youth of America always has the President's ear, may prevail upon a student leader to intercede in their behalf. I happen to have at hand a copy of a letter that a student leader, has written to the President. Excerpts follow: believe this administration finds itself, today, embracing a philosophy which appears to lack appropriate concern for the attitude of the Cabinet. department heads, or at a vast segment of them, believe they have no opportunity to communicate with the President.

Another answer has. been offered to the eternal (well, frequent) question: Does an investor fare better by putting his money into mutual funds or into individual It's not an easy one to answer because you also have to ask, "What stocks?" Many brokers maintain they can pick a sufficient number of winners for their customers to outpace the mutual funds.

One mutual fund manager who'll argue that point is Milton Mound, president of First Multifund of America, a different kind of fund that invests in other funds 29 of them, currently. He has worked up a table comparing average mutual fund performance to average performance of as measured by three popular indexes. One flaw in many such comparisons is that mutual fund gains are compared to, say, the Dow Jones Industrial average. But that's a measure of change only. The average price tor this group of stocks may rise only 9 per cent for the year, but meanwhile owners of these stocks normally have been collecting substantial dividends.

The mutual funds, on the other hand, have learned to include dividends as well as capital gains distributions and share-value increases, in their calculations of gains. Mounds has been brave enough to adjust the Dow-Jones figures for dividends and show how mutual funds come out by comparison. It does make a difference. In 1968, for example, the Dow-Jones average rose 4.0 per cent. Allowing for dividends, the owners of the D-J came off nearly twice as well, with an increase of 7.3,per cent.

Also included in the table are Standard Poor's 500 Stock Average and the New York Stock Exchange Composite Index of all stocks listed on the Big Board. Here is how they fared as compared, to an ail-mutual fund average (430'funds in '69) and the average of all growth funds (272 in '69), over a 10- year period, 1960-69: The investor's profit on an initial $10,000 investment: DJI, unadjusted 1,735 DJI. wrrh 6,448 SAP SOS Stocks NYSE CempesHe All mutual funds 12,162 Growth funds Or, as a percentage of the initial investment, expressed as 10 years' compounded growth: DJI, unadjutted 17.35% DJI, wrrh 44.48% SAP 500 53 NYSE Composite 40.25% All mutual funds 121.52% Growth fends 157.55% The top performing 272 growth funds posted these average gains, or losses in years during the decade, beginning with i960: plus 5.2 per cent, plus 31.1 per cent, minus 18:55 per cent, plus 19.5 per cent, plus 10.5 per cent, plus 27.7 per cent, minus 5.4 per cent, plus 44.7 per cent, plus 17.9 per cent, minus 15.8 per cent (Ah, 1967!
