Joseph and Holdingford gained tenth victories in the Great Soo league to remain tied for the lead. The Saints wedged out a 7-4 win over invading Cold Spring and the Holdings dumped last-place Rock-ville 11-0. In the other games the other two first division outfits won Farming nipping Avon 2-1 and Albany stopping Richmond 5-2. Pitching was the main feature on Sunday's Soo games as Bud Reber tossed a two hitter for St. Joe.

Joe Schleper dished up a four-hit job against Avon, and Lefty Ebnet. Lou Brisse and Fritz Blenker gave up six or less blows for their respective clubs. No change took place in the Soo standings Sunday as two weeks of play remain. Sunday the two leaders meet St. Joseph at Holdingford in a title telling tussle and in the other games Farming is at Cold Spring, Rockville at Albany and Richmond at Avon.

Saints 7, Springers 4 With nine batters hitting safely in a 13-hit attack, St. Joseph tripped Cold Spring 7-4 for a tenth win on their home field Sunday, that held them in a two-way tie with Holdingford for the top. Hitting, but unable to score to often, the Saints win were sparked by the two-hit pitching of Bud Reber who racked up a grand total of 18 strikeouts and walked only three over the route. The Springers went into the first lead, with two in the first inning, but the Saints took over in the third with three and added the four other markers in the fourth and fifth. Bill Meinz and E.

Shortstop Johnson was the Saints fielder of the day with a neat catch of Rausch's liner in the ninth. New York (P) Yankees managed to tie the Chicago White Sox' record of 19 straight victories before they were stopped last week, but they couldn't even come close to one record established by the hit-less wonders 41 years ago. During August, 1906, while the Sox were making their record, big Ed Walsh pitched six shutout games.

Walsh, who lives in Meridan, blanked the Highlanders who later became the Yanks), the Red Sox and the Athletics two times each during that one month, giving up only 24 hits in all. That is believed to be a major league record, though the books don't show it, and just to prove it wasn't a fluke, Big Ed repeated the feat two years later. In 1908 he horse-collared six opponents during September. Nearest thing to those feats was Grover Alexander's four shutouts for the Phillies in August, 1916, the year he hurled 16 scoreless games. Beyond admitting that a core of around 154 or better will be neceary to place in the championship flight of 64, rabid followers of the public fee course game declined to predict the number of strokes that will bring the medal honor. They gave three reasons.

They were the narrowing down of the fairways to toughen up the 6.474-yard layout, lack of definite information on the capabilities of the 180 hopefuls who started the qualifying rounds, and vagaries of the weather high winds Sunday sent practice round scores into the high seventies. Another possible complication cited was the decision of the United States Gold association that stymies would be played. Tee-olf time of 7:30 a.m. (CST) found but one former champion entered. He was Bob Clark of St.

Paul, tlie 1940 winner. Last year's champion, Smiley Quick, of Los Angeles, sent in his entry too late. Joseph Carlone of Cleveland won Sunday's driving contest with 297 yards, 10 inches. Howard Johnson of St. Paul was second with 293 yards and Ray Gates of Memphis, third with 292 yards.
