Dolphins finish undefeated MIAMI (UPI) With veteran quarterback Earl Morrall providing the key gains, the Miami Dolphins whipped the Baltimore Colts 16-0 Saturday to write new running records into the pro football history books and achieve the first perfect regular season in 30 years. The efficient Dolphins "no-name" defense played a sad swan song for the legendary Johnny Unitas, who got into the game for four plays at the end of the first half. At the same time, the Dolphins welcomed back their own star quarterback, Bob Griese, who played in the final period, his first appearance since suffering a leg injury early in the fifth game of the season. Unitas, who told interviewers Friday he would play no more for the Colts, threw two short passes. Miami linebacker Doug Swift picked off the second, one of six turnovers the Dolphins grabbed from the Colts.

Garo Yepremian, Miami's diminutive Cypriot place kicker, was the only point- maker the Dolphins needed for their 14th consecutive victory. He booted field goals of 40 yards in the first period, 50 yards in the third and 35 yards on the second play of the final quarter. But Morall hit wide receiver Paul Warfield with a 14-yard touchdown pass Dolphin-Colt stats with 6:16 left in thesecond quarter to give Miami a little breathing room and a 10-0 lead at halftime. With 4:26 remaining in the third period, Morrall broke out of a trap attempting to pass and ran for five yards. The rush broke the season record of 2,885 yards rushing set by the 1936 Detroit Lions.

Miami also became the only National Football League team to chalk up a 14- game perfect season. The Chicago Bears of 1942 had a perfect regular season but played only 13 games. Behind Brodie 49ers win crown SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) Veteran quarterback John Brodie, out of action for nearly nine games, rallied San Francisco for a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns Saturday to give the 49ers a 20-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings and their third consecutive NFC West title. With the 49ers trailing 17-6, Brodie completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Gene Washington with 6:13 left and then hit Dick Witcher with a two-yard throw with 25 seconds left for the winning score. The victory gave the 49ers an 8-5-1 record in the final regular season game and deprived the Atlanta Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams from any chance to win the division title in their windup games Sunday.

Brodie, out with an ankle injury since Oct. 15, took over with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter and completed ten of 13 passes for 165 yards. However, the 37-year-old quarterback showed signs of inactivity, when he was twice intercepted to stop budding San Francisco drives. On the second interception, the Vikings were unable to move the ball and Mike Eischeid punted the ball out of bounds at the San Francisco one. Then Brodie started the 49ers on a six play 99-yard drive to close the gap to four points at 17-13.

En route, he completed a 12-yard pass to John Isenbarger, a 53- yarder to Gene Washington and an eight yarder to Vic Washington to set the 49ers up at the Minnesota 24. After missing on one pass, Brodie hit Gene Washington for the score. The Vikings, who finished their season at 7-7-1, then kept possession for more than five minutes, finally surrendering the ball with 1:30 left at the San Francisco 34. Then, in a dramatic drive, Brodie look the 49ers 56 yards for the winning score. He completed a nine yard pass to Larry Schreibcr, an eight yarder to Vic Washington and then the 49ers, guilty of six turnovers previously, got a big break when Viking linebacker Jeff Slemon was guilty of pass Interference to set up Son Francisco at the Minnesota 26.

Bruce Gossett booted field goals of 14 and 37 yards in the first half to account for the other San Francisco points while the Vikings scored on an 18-yard pass from Fran Tnrkenton to Ed Marinaro and a 31-yard pass from Turkcnton to John Gilliam and a 43-yard field goal by Fred Cox. Minnesota came back in the last half minute and moved inside the San Francisco 40 with five seconds to go.

But instead of taking a last-gasp effort at a winning touchdown, the Vikings decided to go fora field goal attempt by Fred Cox Uiat missed. Even If Cox had tied the game, the tie would still have given the Forly-Niners the title. i Conference went 14-0, but the NFL does not recognize that record. About the only record Miami missed in this season finale was a chance to become the first team ever to have two, season runners in the same backfield. Fullback Larry Csonka got his 1,000 two games ago and Mercury Morris gave it a valiant try in this game.

Needing 95 yards, he fell nine short with 86. It was the second time this season the Dolphins white-washed the Colts. The Colts have not scored against the Dolphins in 14 periods of play. Baltimore finished its worst season in 16 years with a 5-9 record and Miami will begin preparations as champions of the American Conference East for the first playoff game here Dec. 24 against the AFC's wild card team.

And his old coach had tears in his eyes. Unitas was only in four plays, replacing a slightly injured Marty Domres--the young man ordered to take Johnny's job-- and the second pass he threw was intercepted. But what seemed to matter was that Johnny had a piece of the action in the last football game he will play in a Colts uniform. "He has been great.

It brought tears to my eyes when our Dolphin fans gave John a standing ovation," said Miami Coach Don Shula, who was Unitas' coach at Baltimore. The fans applauded Johnny when he walked into the stadium for the pre-game warmup and again at the end of the first half when he went into the game. In the locker room, Unitas wasn't as emotional as his fans. "Yes, it's definitely my last game for Baltimore--as a player. Maybe in some other capacity, but I can't say now," said the man who is called the greatest quarterback ever to play in the pros.

"I haven't made up my mind what I will do yet. I will give it plenty of thought in the off-season," said the 39-year-old Unitas, who is winding up his 17th year as a pro, all of them with the Colts. Did he haveany emotions about peeling off the blue and white Baltimore uniform for the last time? "Nope," Johnny said with a smile. While Unitas undressed, a Colt representative stood by, stuffing everything he took off into a duffle bag-- famous high-top shoes and even the tape John stripped off. Unitas said he has a 10-year contract at $50,000 a year with the employment contract, not a personal services contract, like everybody's been saying." He said it's up to him whether he will accept the contract.

Unitas said he'll have a talk with new Colts' general manager Joe Thomas, and UPI Unitas has sour look as he sheds Colt football gear decide after that what he will do. But Unitas said he hasn't had much to say up until now to Thomas, the man who ordered him benched at mid-season in favor of the younger Domres. "Thomas doesn't talk with anybody on this team," Unitas said. "He says what he wants' done, he gives the orders. He talks with the coaches, and once or twice he had a team meeting with the players but he didn't say much." Unitas won't suit up again for Baltimore because he doesn't think the quarterback who has completed more passes for more yards and more touch- College cage Florida 78, Ga.
