When it comes to fashion trends for girls, music sets the tone. Actual teen-agers are already twentysomething wannabes, so it's the "tweens" — girls who aren't quite teens yet — who may style themselves after Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore, songs tresses-turned-sir ens with low-slung hiphuggers and halters. The latest hopeful to target the tween fashion market: "Josie and the Pussycats," the new live-action movie about those old cartoon rock 'n' rollers. The movie's costumes reflect what's hot in the stores, and it's accompanied by its own line of "Josie"-branded clothes, from shoes to swimsuits. "Girls of this age ... what rules their lives is music," said Annemarie Iverson, editor in chief of YM magazine. "Music is of the moment, especially now when there are a lot of young stars." Leesa Evans, the costume designer for "Josie," agreed. " 'High fashion' isn't targeted to teens, so they look to music stars because they're the people who cater to them," Evans said. The Pussycats — played by Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid — wear tight second skins of dark denim, beaded tank tops and high heels, a racy wardrobe for a bunch of high schoolers from Riverdale, USA. It was about what they felt good in." Evans, now at work on the live-action "Scooby-Doo" in Australia, said she thought hard about what girls would come away with from seeing "Josie." She put the Pussycats in complementary outfits, such as color-coordinated tank tops with different necklines, instead of cookie-cutter clothes. "I felt a huge responsibility The subtle message is that the girls (in the movie) had fun with the clothes, but they didn't have to follow the hottest trends." She hopes they will set them. While headbands adorned with animal-print ears might not land on every tween's head, asymmetrical tops and low-rider jeans with extreme oversized legs are likely to catch on, Evans predicted. Halters, flower prints, denim, preppy styles of the early 1980s and hiphuggers are all trendy with the tween crowd, YM's Iverson said. And nothing makes clothes trendy faster than the seal of approval from kids with babysitting money in their pockets. "These girls are instantly reflective of trends," Iverson said. "I don't know if they start them or if they take them from music videos or what, but trends trickle up and trickle down from them very quickly" Designer Betsey Johnson recognizes the market power of tween girls — whether they're spending their own money or their parents'. "Five-year-olds want to look like their 12-year-old sisters," Johnson said. "Teens and young twentysomethings look great, and little girls want to do the same — and do it faster." Johnson makes matching outfits for 8- to 14-year-olds and their moms. For the pint-size versions, the necklines are raised and the skirts are lowered. "It's age appropriate with an edge," said Kim Hingley, Betsey Johnson's vice president of sales. A little goes a long way in makeup Parents should teach girls that actions, not looks, define them By ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY The Associated Press NEW YORK — It starts with a touch of lip gloss. Then, she wants to wear eye shadow — but just a little, she promises. Next comes the mascara, then the blush. Suddenly there's no turning back. Your daughter is wearing makeup. Now what? First, take a deep breath. Girls in their "tween" years, between 8 and 14, typically want to wear cosmetics, said Tina Pieraccini, who studies the effect of media on women, children and minorities. They are surrounded by media images of sexy starlets, and the girls want to emulate what they see, said Pieraccini, a professor of broadcasting at the State University of New York at Oswego. "At that age, they don't define themselves from within," she said. "Media is part of what a young girl uses to define herself, and to mirror those images is common." Once it's been established that makeup is on the horizon for a young girl, she should not venture out alone into the sea of cosmetics. By exploring makeup options together, parents can help their daughter understand that her actions, not her appearance, define who she is. Also — given teen-agers' propensity to wear anything involving glitter — making sure they learn to apply makeup correctly is one way to avoid having your little girl resemble a disco ball. Gordon Espinet, chief makeup artist for MAC cosmetics, said girls should keep their makeup "minimal, minimal, minimal." "For younger girls, makeup is not to shape and define a face as much as it's just to add color," he said. "You want to keep it light, fresh.' You don't want to use makeup to make you look older" But this philosophy can be at odds with what a girl wants to wear. Annemarie Iverson, editor in chief of YM magazine, said young girls tend to overdo their makeup more than high school­ ers who better understand proportion. Iverson noted the popular beauty products range from pink and glittery to dramatic — including stage makeup such as black, gothic eyeliner. "There's something fresh and pretty about long, exaggerated eyelashes." (Although he urges girls to stick with basic black instead of the bright colors he sees them wearing.) Unlike most beauty-product companies that target older consumers but still attract younger ones, Bonne Bell is a girls' makeup brand. It considers age-appropriateness when developing its products. Julie Shlepr, director of marketing, called the offerings "girl-selected, mom-approved." A popular product for tweens is Lip Smackers, which are clear lip balms in flavors including Dr Pepper, Berry Heavenly, Lunar Lime and Orange Sh-Orbit. Today, island kids don't play in the mud flats anymore or climb the cliffs or swim the lagoons or even build rafts and head out to the other islands. ^ Nearly everywhere, children's exploration has suddenly gone inside and become a virtual activity on the computer. Instead of exploring, they watch movies and get rickets. Rickets? Ac- ^ cording to an * article on children's health, virtual activities are a main reason for obesity in children, a new increase of Type 2 diabetes and a resurgence of rickets, a softening of the bones as a result of a lack of vitamin D. Children simply don't get enough sunlight, fresh air and activities that increase their heart rates. We used to compensate with vitamin D milk, but kids drink soda. Whether in child care or at home, children spend too many hours indoors. It's ruining their health. Twenty-five years ago, I told my kids, "Don't fall in the river; we eat at 6." That meant go outside and explore the world and get home by dinnertime so we can review your day As a young mother, I found out quickly that children who run hard all day are hungry, resilient to illness and sleep like rocks. Exercise promotes hunger, and hunger promotes healthy eating. Healthy eating used to be a pleasure, an adventure to children who were always hungry But suddenly, eating is a big bore and often requires a fight. Picky kids terrorize parents and providers. Picky comes from inactivity and an abundance of junk. As a child, I ate anything because I was hungry Our treats were a remarkable pleasure. Cake was for birthdays; once a week we had cookies. Ice cream was a special occasion. We had candy at Easter. Soda was a party treat, and potato chips belonged to somebody else. Today junk treats are expected in surplus supply Children even expect a dessert on their lunch tray Sirens and whistles, please. Are we apologizing to children about eating nutritious food? Here's a lunch I recently found on a school bus: a candy bar, a fruit strip and a bag of chips. Wake up, adults in charge. Lunch should be the center of the noon break. It's not punishment time; it's adventure time. But no lunch will work if a child isn't hungry And how can children be hungry if they haven't moved since they got up eating junk? A chUd's natural fill-up time is early in the day By 4 p.m., most children have eaten most of their daily calories. Therefore, parents should demand that child-care centers and schools offer the best quality calories possible. Just as at home, it encourages good eating habits. At the same time, especially in formative years, children in child care, home or school should be able to meet their physical needs outdoors for several hours every day just to stimulate an appetite. Families don't need to be on an island to make the break with virtual exercise; they just need to watch their children run. Many children can't; it's too hard. Watching children run says a lot about environment.
