"This is a bold niove on the part of the NBA to change the rules and allow something that we've spent many years hiding from — zone defenses," Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo said. "This may be one of the most significant changes imposition of the shot clock." Designed to improve the flow and pace of the game and reduce teams' dependance on isolation plays, the new rules will be tested during summer league play before officially taking effect next season. The changes are: • Eliminating all existing illegal defense guidelines. • Establishing a defensive 3- second rule, limiting the amount of time a defensive player may stand in the lane when he is not closely guarding someone. • Reducing from 10 seconds to 8 seconds the amount of time a team will have to advance the ball past midcourt. • Eliminating touch fouls by allowing brief contact initiated by a defensive player if it does not impede the progress of the player with the ball. The NBA did not release the result of the vote. A two-thirds majority was required for passage, meaning at least 20 of the 29 teams were in favor. "We had more than 20," Colangelo said. Several players and coaches were opposed to the changes, believing the NBA is making too big of a move in response to lower scores, declining television ratings and flat attendance figures. KANSAS JUNIOR COLLEGE PLAYER SIGNS WITH CREIGHTON — Kansas junior college basketball player Larry House has signed to play with Creighton next season. House, a 6-foot-4 forward, averaged 17.7 points per game in two seasons at Colby Community College. He signed with the Bluejays on Wednesday and will be a junior next fall. House averaged 8.6 rebounds per game his first season at Colby and 7.6 last season. House, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., chose Creighton over South Carolina, Charlotte, Oklahoma, Long Beach State and UW-Milwaukee. SOURCE: AIKMAN JOINING FOX AS NFL ANALYST — Troy Aikman, who retired from the NFL this week, is joining Fox Sports as a game analyst, an industry source told The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity Fox had been in talks with Aikman since he announced Monday that he was ending a 12-year NFL career in which he quarterbacked the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl championships. Aikman will fill Matt Milieu's slot on the network's No. 2 NFL announcing team, alongside play-by-play announcer Dick Stockton. WOMAN SUES OVER GUNSHOT WOUND AT KAUFFMAN STADIUM — A woman shot during a baseball game is suing the Kansas City Royals, saying the team and Kauffman stadium should have made sure no one in the stadium had a gun. A police investigation determined the shot came from a nearby highway. The suit filed by Virginia and Gerald Olsthoorn of Haysville, was moved to federal court earlier this week. It also names the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority KEENAN OUT AS COACH, BUT NO SUCCESSOR NAMED — Mike Keenan is out as head coach of the Boston Bruins, but the team stopped short of designating assistant Peter Laviolette as his replacement. Keenan replaced Pat Burns, fired Oct. 25, eight games into the season, and he led the team to within a tiebreaker of making the playoffs. The Bruins went 33-26-7-8 in 74 games under Keenan, and tied Carolina for the final Eastern Conference berth with 88 points. The Hurricanes won the tiebreaker with two more wins. O'Connell met with Keenan on Thursday morning to tell him the team would not exercise its option to retain him for two more years.
