I SPORTS DIGEST Auto racing CONCORD, N.C. — Bobby Labonte, continuing a late-season surge to give car owner Joe Gibbs his first victory of 1996, captured the pole Wednesday night for the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Labonte guided a Chevrolet Monte" Carlo to a fast lap of 184.068 mph to easily outpace defending Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon for the top starting position in Sunday's race. Gibbs' cars have won five events since he ditched his ca- as a Super Bowl-winning coach with the reer Washington Redskins to go racing in 1992. But after one victory each in 1993 and '94 and three last year, Gibbs has yet to produce a winner this year. Baseball ST. LOUIS — Five days after suffering a torn rotator cuff, Ray Lankford felt good enough that he tried to persuade the St. Louis Cardinals to let him play in Game 2 of the playoffs. "If it feels good, I'll try to give it a shot tomorrow," Lankford said after the Cardinals' off-day workout Wednesday. "I still feel some tenderness, but it's not stiff. "Sometimes, you've got to play with pain." Lankford was injured making a diving catch on Friday night and at game-tune for the regular-season finale Sunday he couldn't lift his arm. On Tuesday, the Cardinals waited until the 11 a.m. deadline before including him on the postseason roster. By Wednesday he had made remarkable progress, taking batting practice just like one of the guys and playing a little catch with teammate Brian Jordan. Both were firsts. "I don't think he's ready," Jordan said. "At least he can throw a little and he can swing." Manager Tony La Russa doesn't think he's ready, either, and said Willie : McGee will start in center field again in Game 2 , today against the San Diego Padres. But he wasn't counting Lankford, who had 21 homers, 86 RBIs and a team-leading 35 steals, out for Game 3 Saturday night in San Diego. NEW YORK — The first game of baseball's new postseason television format, Texas' 6-2 victory at the Yankees on Tuesday night, got an 8.6 rating and 15 share. Last year, regionalized coverage of the opening night of the playoffs got a 10.1 rating and 12 share on NBC. Baseball was criticized for not televising all games nationally, , so it switched back to staggered starts this year and sold afternoon games to ESPN, the first postseason baseball games on cable. In all, 12.5 million viewers watched one of the three playoff games Tuesday, up from 9.7 million who watched the regionalized coverage last year. ESPN's broadcast of Baltimore's win over Cleveland got a 2.6 cable rating, and St. Louis' victory over San Diego got a 3.5 cable rating. While the Rangers- Yankees' game on NBC was available in 95.9 million homes, the ESPN telecasts were available in: 69.8 million. The rating is the percentage of television households in the nation tuned to a broadcast. The share is the percentage watching a telecast among those televisions on at the time. PITTSBURGH — With at least two teams maneuvering to make him baseball's highest-paid manager, the Florida Marlins rushed back into action Wednesday to stay the front-runners in the Jim Leyland derby. Despite prior assurances from Leyland that a formal presentation wasn't necessary, Marlins president Don Smiley and general manager Dave Dombrowski flew to Pittsburgh to convince him they'll compete with anybody. "(Marlins owner) Wayne Huizenga is not going to be outbid on something he really wants by (Chicago White Sox owner) Jerry ReinsSorf or anyone else," said a source close to Huizenga. On Tuesday, the California Angels surprised Leyland with an incentive-laden offer that could be worth as much as $8 million over four years. And the White Sox apparently are willing to top the $1.5 million salary of St. Louis' Tony La Russa, currently the highest-paid manager, to land the former Pirates manager.
