OVER MILLION DOLLAR TAX R. Johnson, left, lax assessor collector for Galveston County, accepts a check for $1,445,827.85 from John Lundin, accounting manager of the American Oil Company's Texas City My Two Cents refinery, for the refinery's county and state property lax bill for 1971. The refinery paid nearly $4 million in property taxes to various taxing authorities for 1971. An Occasional Reaction, ByBRADMESSER NEWS MANAGING EU1TOH YES, WELL, if one writes a column one must expect occasional reaction. Here I had been under the impression that my use of LJie first personal pronoun was modestly restricted, but apparently one reader disagrees.

Or maybe it was a computer that responded, since the item mailed was a clipping from some publication and it was sent anonymously in an envelope with no return address. The clipping title is "A Short Course In Human Relations." It goes: "The six important words: I admit I made a mistake. The five most important words: You did a good job. The four most important words: What is your opinion? The three must important words: If you please. The two most important words: Thank you.

The one most important word: We. The least important word: Thank you, sir or madam or ms, for your opinion. You did a good job. We shall watch it in the future. ANOTHER RESPONSE to last week's column about women's lib came in the form of a PS.

on a letter to the editor. The letter very capably staled some of the issues in the matter, as you may have noticed if you read the letter in last Saturday's issue of The Galveston Uajly News. In her postscript, Madelon Eubanks of Texas City set me straight very quickly on one point: "What women in the movement want also includes not being' called 'gals'." Okay, Madelon, but I can't believe you or any female would want to be considered neuter gender. (Oh. boy! Is this ever inviting disaster; I can't even win an argument with my wife except by being silent.) But Ms.

Eubanks continues, in her postscript, with some very good points. She says women in the movement want no more "patronizing references to the idea that women don't want to give up little male chivalries. I will trade in those petty privileges right now in exchange fur my full rights and responsibilities." She continues: "Where is chivalry when a man opens a door for a woman but denies her a promotion in favor of a less qualified man? Where is chivalry when a man lights a woman's cigaret but doesn't get up for half of the infant's 3 a.m. feedings? Where is chivalry when the man holds the coat for a woman but stays watching television when the child in the back bedroom is vomiting and the mattress and floors are disaster areas? What is chivalry anyway but an easy way for a man to feel important and wonderfully helpful? It Is a subtle deception of the woman, making her think she is pampered by small niceties while in the larger sense she is being denied opportunities to become a mature, responsible, inventive i i i a MY GOODNESS! What kind of man is she talking about? I thought all husbands did at least half of the night floor walking with babies. If they don't, there must be something wrong with the wives that let them get away with such foolishness.

As to chivalry which consists of courtesy, courage, nobility, fairness, respect for women, protection of the poor, and other knightly virtues I'm afraid Ms. Eubanks is right. I about as scarce as the knights that once personified it. I'll bet the knights were real jewels to live with!) Maybe there's an unwritten law of nature that says men, women and equality arc non compatible. Judging from our soaring divorce rate, it looks like men and women arc increasingly incompatible.

Hut on the other hand, mayhe equality would eliminate the causes of incompatibility. Oh, well. There is some comfort in the fact that although women's lib may hold some threat to the male's assumed of superiority, there are still a lot of happily married women who wouldn't want a thing changed in their husband wife relationship. Of course, I can't think of their names, ri ght HERWIN- WlLLIAMS We're More Than A Paint Store WE'RE A CANDY STORE WITH A SWEET SALE ON READY-TO-FINISH FURNITURE ONE BIG WEEK FEB. 2nd thru 9th Unfinished furniture at sweet sale prices.
