But the 21-year-old knows many girls are unsure of themselves. That's why she's worked for the past three years with Teen Esteem, a group that tries to boost the self-esteem of young women. "All females especially — even males today for that matter — •'^ deal with insecurity about body image and,the way one looks," Mya told AP Radio duringa yi.s- it to a Chicago middle school Tuesday „ .,; "Unfortunately our society focuses a lot on what we look like instead of our skill." . < Mya, whose "Case of the Ex (Watcha Gonna Do)" was a recent top-five Billboard hil:, said many girls she works with have negative feelings about their bodies. ' , ". "Some of these feelings can lead to sicknesses and overeating, undereating, anorexia, bulimiia, a number of things that affect the future and health of a young girl," she said. , , Brooks basks in ethnic pride NEW YORK — There's a very serious reason Mel Brooks makes so many jokes about being Jewish. The writer-director-actor of such classiccom- ic films as "Blazing Saddles" and "History of the World; Part I" says his humor stems from a deep- seated anger about anti-Semitism. •" " • "Yes, I am a Jew. I AM a Jew," he says on ''60 Minutes," which airs at 6 p.m. Sunday on CBS. "What about it? What's so wrong? What'Sthe matter with being a Jew? I think there's a 16t of that way deep down beneath all the quick Jewish jokes that I do." • - • The 74-year-old Brooks' latest venture'is a Broadway version of "The Producers" starriiig Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Brooks wrote and directed the 1968 film of the same name for which he won an Oscar for best original screenplay 'Josie' really Cooks on stage LOS ANGELES — She isn't a rock star, so filming the concert scenes for "Josie and the Pussycats" was "a little bewildering" for actress Rachael Leigh Cook. Adapted from the comic book and 1970s cartoon series, the movie stars Cook as singer-guitarist Josie, Rosario Dawson,as bass player Val and Tara Re:id as drummer Melody Although Cook knew the extras had been told to go wild, the 21-year-old said it was still exciting to see them respond to her every move. , , "Smoke machines go off and there's a light, people start yelling. The stadium (is) full of what I think they said was eight or nine thousand (people). I just couldn't believe it," she said. COOK • ADVICE Daughter wants mom to stop acting like girlfriend Dear Ann Landers: When my parents divorced four years ago, my mother and I became quite close. We began to share some of our personal lives ^ with each other, which I didn't mind doing. I am now 23 years old. This past year, Mom has started to treat me less like a daughter and more like a girlfriend. She has told me some hair-raising stories about her sexual escapades as a single woman, and now, she keeps pressing me for details about my sex life. When I tell her I don't want to talk about it, she says I'm a prude and urges me to "open up." Ann, her newly acquired "openness" makes me very uncomfortable. I want to be her friend, but I also want her to be my mother. I don't mind sharing some ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. ^ things with her, but there are other things I wish to keep to myself. I also don't want to hear all the personal stuff she tells me. How can I get her to stop encroaching on my privacy without hurting her feelings? — Linda in Florida Dear Linda: Your poor mother is trying to turn you into a girlfriend and relive her youth. This is not a healthy situation for you or for her. You must draw the line firmly and distinctly, and the sooner the better. Sample sentence: "Mom, I really don't want to hear about that. You're my mother, and I want to think of you as such." You are an adult woman now, and your sex life is none of her business. Dear Ann Landers: Please get this message out to all parents who read your column. It is VERY IMPORTANT. Yesterday I went into the dining room to set the table for supper. I left my 13- month-old daughter playing on the floor in the living room. Within 30 seconds, she had unzipped my purse and was happily swallowing several prescription tablets that I had put in a container. I immediately pulled the container out of her hands and ran into the bathroom to get syrup of ipecac. I phoned the doctor to get the correct dosage and gave my daughter a spoonful. Over the next 15 minutes, she vomited up six barely dissolved tablets. She was able to avoid a visit to the emergency room because we had the syrup in the house. If I had needed to drive to the pharmacy to get it, it might have been too late. The pills would have entered her bloodstream, and the results could have been disastrous. Please urge parents, grandparents and caregivers to keep all medications, cleaning solutions and toxic materials locked up or put in childproof containers. Keep the number for poison control next to the phone. Buy syrup of ipecac, and keep it where you will be able to remember where it is in moments of stress. Those precious few minutes could save your child's life. — Relieved Mother in Texas Dear Relieved Mother: Your letter could make a world of difference to a great many readers and their children. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write. It also gives me an opportunity to remind parents once again to lock up cleaning fluids and any and all pills, cough syrup, even mothballs (they look like candy) — anything youngsters might put into their mouths. The kitchen and bathroom are the most dangerous rooms in the house for children. Keep medicine cabinets locked. Don't assume things on a higher shelf will be out of reach. Children can climb. And be sure to have syrup of ipecac handy and the numbers for poison control and your doctor posted by the phone. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611. • • TV TONIGHT 4/13/01 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 QPBS, B.H.-Hays Wash.
