I Orioles Place Two On All-State, Reed City's Chupp On First Team Barnett, Harwood Given Class Honorable Mention Ludington Dally News, Wednesday, November 27, IftM. I By RICHARD L. SHOOK United International Jim Crowley knew he'd never get four of his Jackson Lumen Christ! players on the Class All-State team. But would he settle for three out of four? "Really?" said Crowley, the former head coach of Jackson St. John who was given the top spot when his school merged the city's other Catholic school, St.

Mary, when they became Lumen Christi High this fall. "You wouldn't be kidding me, would you? This is wonderful." Third ranked after beating seven of eight Class A opponents and crumpling its lone scheduled foe the same size, Jackson Lumen Christi placed junior end Tom Devine, guard Dave Southwell and halfback Steve Lefere on United Press International's Class All-State team, which was announced today. The more than 250 coaches, sports editors and sportscasters polled by UPI also came up with a pair of Kalamazoo ett seniors on the top eleven in quarterback Dave Butkovitch and his pass receiving teammate, end Skip Schultz. Others selected to the honor team included tackles Cory Gildersleeve of Oscoda and Dennis Jonio of Coopersville, both of whom moved up from third and second team spots last season; guard Gary Schmidt of Three Oaks River Valley: center Craig Martin of Sturgis; halfback Bill Chupp of Reed City, and fullback Gregg Ward of Portland. "I know four players from the same team won't make All- State," Crowley wrote in a note enclosed with his ballot, "but in all honesty, I couldn't list without the others." The three who did make the first team were selected by such a wide margin over their competitors they really didn't need their coaches' vote.

Last season, Manistee Catholic Central placed three players on the combined C-D team. Southwell, who stands six-feet tall and weighs an even 200 pounds, was described as one of the best linemen in the state by coaches who picked him. Barnett played left tackle on offense and the right side on defense while Harwood played, the opposite end.
