The New Mexico Museum of Natural History opens today. Kids' fascination led to building museum ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Kids' fascination with huge bones turned pupils into a powerful lobby that helped persuade lawmakers to build this century's first, full-scale natural history museum. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History opens today, fulfilling the dreams of New Mexicans who wanted to keep the state's fossil and mineral treasures at home. "Keep our bones at home" was the slogan used to raise money for the museum. A display of ancient bones and artifacts in the Capitol rotunda in 1980 was an instant hit with youngsters who came to see the Legislature, said former state Sen. John Irick, who sponsored the bill that created the museum. "Museum bills are not easy to pass. The fact that these kids got so wrapped up and let their Senate and House members know had more to do with the passage than any other thing,"Irick said. The New Mexico museum, a two- story stucco building near the historic district that was the site of the original city, is the first of its kind since the Denver Museum of Natural History was created in 1895, officials said. "It takes a long time to become the caliber of a truly great museum like the Denver museum," Irick said. "I would suspect that 100 years from now, the museum will be a truly great museum." "We need to preserve the ancient life forms and fossils that are part of the history of the state of New Mexico. They've been going to museums all over the world for the past 100 years,"Irick said. Irick said he plans to see the mu- seum for the first time during the weekend grand opening. Officials estimate 8,000 to 10,000 people each day will use the free tickets that have been given out for today and Sunday. In 1980, the Legislature pledged $8 million to build the museum, but that was contingent on $2 million in private donations being raised by 1982. "I'm glad it worked out that they did require us to get the $2 million locally," said Irick, one of three people put in charge of raising the money. "It truly became a people effort. It made a lot of friends for the museum and the (museum) foundation that it would not have had if it were not for the fund-raising. When you put your money into something, you take an interest in it." The funds came from children, families and businesses large and small. The city of Albuquerque, which donated the land for the museum, also guaranteed the $2 million. More than $2 million has been pledged, and most of the money from the city has been repaid, Irick said. Visitors this weekend can walk through a reconstructed cave, based on the famed Carlsbad Caverns. They also will be able to go inside a "volcano," simulated using fiber optics. The museum has skeletons of dinosaurs, a mammoth, dire wolves and a saber-tooth cat. Other displays include "Origins," an exhibit from the beginning of time through the period in which plant and animal life emerges onto land; minerals of the Southwest; an 80-foot relief model of the Rio Grande; and an area in which visitors can see curators working on casting bones. "Yuppie tax' draws howls from clubs CHICAGO (AP) - The city's new 4 percent "yuppie tax" on membership fees at health and athletic clubs is being challenged by operators who say the plan to raise money for the poor unfairly singles out people who want to stay in shape. The tax, nicknamed after the young urban professionals who frequent the city's health, racquetball, tennis and other clubs, went into effect Thursday, and 14 clubs immediately filed suit arguing the tax is illegal under Illinois law. The levy, which the clubs say will be passed on to members, is intended to raise up to $1.5 million a year to help the needy. "We're not calling it a yuppie tax, but we know the people who belong to these clubs can pay it," said Gery Chico, who helped draft the tax measure as research manager for the City Council Finance Committee. "Those places cost a lot of bucks. They are not for the meager," he said. Chico noted that the tax was approved by the usually divided City Council by a 39-0 vote. "Nobody was against it because it's going to help the poor, "he said. He rejected the argument that it penalizes people who want to stay fit, saying, "If they want to stay in shape, they can do it at home." The tax was an unpopular topic Friday among members who were sweating their way through workouts at the Chicago Health Club. "They should be taxing people who are overweight, not those who are trying to stay in shape," said Paul Urbanick, as he worked out in the exercise room. Joe Ranieri, area supervisor for the clubs, said his members are not yuppies just trying to look good in a bathing suit. "Our members are just people trying to stay in shape. That doesn't only apply to yuppies. Everyone would like to be in better shape," he said. Ranieri said it costs an average of $700 to join his club with annual fees of about $250 after the inititiaton. Larry Vicars, who has been a club member for 20 years, said: "I'm not a yuppie; I just want to stay in shape. They ought to tax cigarettes and liquor more instead of coming after us." The lawsuit filed by the health-club operators contends the tax is a service tax and an occupation tax, both of which are illegal under Illinois law.
