After a third place effort in the fifth annual City of Apopka Invitational baseball tournament, coach Sonny Wise's Blue Darters dropped back-to-back outings to Evans and Oak Ridge. After only two victories in its first 16 games, fastpitch softball team notched back-to-back victories with an 11-9 upset of Winter Park. Three hits by Angie DeSensi paved the way in a come-from-behind, 7-6, victory over Evans for the 4-14 Darters.

Buoy set 1 10 miles off shore also popular eatery for sharks When the hat blew off my head and a shark inhaled it almost by the time it hit the water, I was glad we were in a 48-foot fishing boat.

In anything smaller, I would have felt a bit uneasy. I turned to Capt. Eddie Roberts, who sat at the helm of his 48-foot offshore charter boat, Adventurous. "Please make sure I don't fall out of the boat," I said. "If a shark can get that excited over an old fishing hat, just think how worked up it could get over fresh meat." Captain Eddie grinned and turned the big Pacemaker sportfishing boat for another run by the NOAA offshore weather buoy, located 110 miles east of Port Canaveral.

The fishing was fantastic. After listening to several Orlando anglers who have made the 220-mile round trip to the weather buoy tell about the fantastic angling for the past six months, I was finally venturing out to the buoy. This time, I could experience it first hand. Fishing with us were Dan Moore of Orlando and Cocoa Beach anglers George McDonald, Scott McCauley and Jim Houston. Capt.

Derwood Roberts, Eddie's son, was also along for his third trip to the buoy. After cruising all night, we arrived at the buoy, which is rapidly becoming so famous for its yellowfin tuna fishing that anglers refer to it as "Tuna Town." We had just made our first run by the buoy and hooked up with yellowfins on all three rods. This was a repeat for the first 20 times we circle the buoy. Before the weekend was over, we had boated 50 yellowfin tuna weighing up to 35 pounds each, a dozen dolphin to 25 pounds each and five sharks. We released half of the yellowfins.

We had a great time, but like I said, I was glad we were aboard a 48-foot boat. Although calm seas and good weather had been predicted, we hit some eight-foot seas and weathered a storm or two during the trip. McDonald made the trip again in a 46-boat a couple of weeks later and they encountered 12-foot seas, according to Jack Rinehart of Captain Jack's tackle shop in Port Canaveral. They had the sea coming at them from all directions. They caught, tagged and released 30 yellowfin tuna during their trip to the buoy and caught and kept some big dolphin.

During the trip, they tried to chum the tuna with smelly chunks of cut bait. However, so many sharks showed up that they had to put a halt to the chumming, said Rinehart. Because of the number of sharks around the buoy and also because of the distance involved, I would not recommend making the trip to the buoy in small boats. Some Orlando area fishermen have made the trip to the buoy in 20-foot boats. But even during the hot summer months when seas are usually much calmer, fishermen are taking a chance venturing out 110 miles offshore to the buoy.

It takes a large supply of fuel to make the trip. At least one boat out of New Smyrna-Daytona Beach area ran out of fuel on the return trip from the buoy and had to be rescued by the Coast Guard. Furthermore, if you don't have a side band radio on your boat, you will not be able to contact shore for help And by the time help arrives, it could be too late. It a giiod idea for boats to travel in pairs. If you don't have a big boat, I would suggest you charter a large fishing boat to take you to the buoy.

It will cost you approximately $1,800 to do so, but if four or five anglers split the coast, it may be much cheaper than making the trip in your own smaller boat. Also, it may be much safer. I decided that when my lt blew off and a shark ate it for breakfast. UNIVERSITY Cougars' softball program, in its first season of fastpitch competition, coach Sara Jo McLemore's team moved into the No. 9 position of Florida Sports Writers' Association A-AA-AAA poll with a 15-4 record.

Stacy Tucker was the offensive catalyst in a 7-4 victory over Edge-water. Anissa Lane picked up a third victory and had three hits in a 20-1 thrashing of Jones. Coach Jerry Buchert's second-year football program begins spring workouts May. 1 The Cougars were 2-8 in their first varsity season. After a strong showing in the Colonial Classic, coach Rick Stephan's baseball team was tripped up by Winter Park, 3-2, and Boone, 12-2.

Carroll a major reason Valencia vying for crown CARROLL from K-11 lege has been relatively smooth for Carroll His pitching is a primary reason Valencia has been in a neck-and-neck battle with Central Florida for the conference crown. "I think I've done well," said Carroll, 20. "When I first started, coach put me in the stopper role to get my experience up, to build my confidence, and it really has helped me." "Sean is not a surprise," Mabie he's doing now is why we recruited him. He had excellent potential coming out of high school." Carroll, who pitched only one varsity season at West Orange, was 9-2 with a 1.85 earned-run average and 91 strikeouts in 89 innings as a senior. "College hitters are more aggressive," Carroll said.

"And you can't count on striking everybody out At this level, pitchers have to pitch smarter, hit spots more." Dr. Phillips' future looking bright with only 1 senior GIRLS from K-11 The prognosis for years to come is better. A pair of sophomores Kathy Cypherd and Jennifer Close have provided the stability on a team that boasts only one senior Laurie Hightower. Two freshmen Lauren Mellen and Julie Hightower complete Sparks' district roster. Cypherd, who has averaged 42 strokes per nine holes this season, is the Panthers' medalist Close and Laurie Hightower have averaged rounds in the low 50s; Mellen 55; and Julie Hightower in the mid-60s.

"Our top four girls all are very diligent about their work and have been very consistent," Sparks said. "They really work at their game, but that's what it takes." One day a week the girls practice at MetroWest but home for the Panthers is the Charger layout at Bay Hill. All-Orange County selec? tion, and this year's Orange Extra boys basketball athlete of the year, stood tall in Wy-; more's 1990 state championship and was-; the tournament's most valuable player. Wymore's bid to defend its crown came; up short despite Bowman's game-high 32--. point exhibition.

Wymore lost its title, 87-2 83, in overtime to Malone (32-4). However, a season of similar efforts; didn't go unrewarded. I Bowman was among first-team selections of the Florida Sports Writers Association's-Class A all-state team. A "go-to" player, Bowman proved to bel the one player coach Jerry Howard could; count on the Bobcats' lineup. Court savvy is Bowman's gift.

It Bowman's offense is a given, but he also understands improvement is needed in his-defensive play as he moves up a level to-junior college competition. Damron has set torrid pace on area's courses BOYS from K-11 strokes in 1989 to St Andrews of Boca Raton; the Panthers rolled to a stunning 29-stroke victory last year over Southeast of Bradenton in Sarasota In the medalist competition, Damron was third to Michael Baird, son of former PGA pro Butch Baird, and Bobby Collins of Damron, who has signed to play next season for the University of Central Florida, had played many area courses this season like he owns them. Among accomplishments are three rounds of 3-under 33; two of 2-under 34; and three more of 1-under 35. Fedell believes Damron's average 34.5 per nine holes may be the lowest in Central Florida history. Damron would like nothing better than to become the first golfer from Central Florida since Eric Slovenkay of Winter Park in 1975 to win medalist honors.

Short of that, Damron Co. would like nothing better than to help Dr. Phillips repeat: But Damron has had plenty of support Rugerio has averaged 38 strokes per nine holes; and Colbert, who was sixth in last year's bid for a state medalist title, 39.
