muph pressure on them for an entire season here as those Lawton high Coach Bob Williams remarked yesterday as he sent his Wolverine cage squad through' its for home finale against Altus The little cage skipper was referring to his stylish guard combination of blond Bobby Pollan and scrappy Johnny Davis had to take most of our shots this year be cause the other boys been able to hit consistent ly Every defense has been set to stop Bobby and Johnny but given me all they had all the way expect much more from the two kids I would have hated to play this season without Williams added softly Lawton high has had finer individual guards than Pol lan or Davis down through the years but this observer recall a pair of guards which could compare with the dandy senior duo which plays before the home folks for the last time tonight in tyolverine togs Williams agrees that they comprise the best guard combination he's coached at LHS and added: definitely hit better than any guards coached but so much of the offensive burden has been on them that they haven't really been able to concentrate on defense Bright This Season Prospects are high for banner and doubles are on tap Thursday seasons for both Lawton high boys! in the indoor meet The outdoor By LEO IL PETERSEN United Press Sports Editor BRADENTON la Until the Los Angeles Dodgers replace their older players they have "had so far as winning Na tional League pennants is con cerned That was the prediction today of Billy Herman the former great seedhd baseman who went to the Milwaukee Braves as a coach this season after" serving six years ih that capacity with the Dodgers when they played in Brooklyn "Age is catching up with Pee Wee Reese Duke Snider Carl ii rillo and Gil Herman emphasized "They were four ma jor reasons while in the six years I was whh the Dodgers they won four pennants finished second once and third once" Have Passed Potential "I don't mean to say that any of them are at the end' of the road especially Snider but they all have passed their potential and that is lxund to be bad news for the Dodgers "Why outside of Warren Spahn and Andy Pafko we haven't any player who have reached their he claimed is good enough as he is while Pafko doesn't figure to be out there every day sure the Braves of today have an even brighter future than the Dodgers did when 1 startedcoaching for them back in 1931" Billy doesn't agree with thosevho think the change from Eb bets ields Brooklyn to Los An geles will give such players as Reese Snider urillo and Hodges "a shot in the been around too Herman reasoned "A change like that is likely to benefit the young er players but not the older Mfghfy Valuable He said he just couldn't de scribe "How badly I felt 'when I heard about Campy" Roy Cam panella an ace catcher foj the Dodgers' suffered a broken neck in an auto accident and his play ing career probably is ended don't think the Dodgers were counting on him to catch every day this year but he would be a mighty valuable player to havearound for spot Herman believes the Dodgers can "come mighty close to match ing the in pitching the one department they aren't hurting he said in the outfield and the in field age is catching up with them They still are going to be tough to beat but we should do it this year and in all the years to come until they get replace ments for their older players" GUESS Don Boucher and Harvey Coombs are prob ably the best defensive combination coached but they played on teams with more Williams explained Boucher and Coomios teamed at the LHS guard slotsthree years ago Boucher is now playing at Oklahoma Baptist university which just recently nailed down a berth in the NAIA tournament at Kansas City and Coombs will start his third season in the Los Angeles farm system was the best defensive man I've coached at the guard slot but I believe Davis dr Pollan could have been as tough as Don if they have to cany so much of the load on the fiery Wolverine coach commented Williams has steadfastly refused to compare Davis and Pollan know which is best hate to think wherewe would be without either one of them this Bob hedges neatly But he did whip out his basketball grading book which has a complete breakdown on the play of the flashy guard combo during the season After a long inspection of chart some definite impressions can be made Pollan appears to be the best marksman of the two while Davis is definitely the steadiest floor man Johnny usually draws the task of patrolling the outstanding 'little on" the rival team too THE CU: Coach Abe Lemons says his Okla homa City university Chiefs are being considered for a berth in the NIT tournament at Madison Square Garden talked with NIT officials yesterday and they sound ed encouraging know in a day or affable Abe said while in town last night to watch former OCU All American Arnold Short play with the ort Chaffee All Stars Short by the way was his usual tremendous self while hitting 32 greatest basketball player produced in the Sooner state Arnie' still has that unguardable fade away jump shot which he hits with deadly accuracy from out front or along the base line After being thrilled by unorthodox jump shot for the umpteenth time last night Lemons recalled that he still gets calls from coaches who have another Arnold Short 9 now and then some coach will call say got a boy who shoots exactly like Short Of course we check and find that the kid may shoot like Arni6 but one big difference the kid will average only six or eight points don't believe anyone can copy shot and the defense concentrating on him shooting av erage is certainly commendable Davis who has missed one of 19 games with an injury has put up 207 shots and connected SO times for an accuracy rating of 32 per Pollan has also been a triflesmore accurate at the free throw' line hitting 53 of 74 for 72 per cent while Johnny has hit 47 of 74 for 64 per cent Blond Bob about two inches taller than Davis also leads in rebounds 80 57 but has comfnitted more mis takes or example Davis has only 14 bad passes this year compared with 28 for Pollan Johnny has been flagged down for only seven violations compared with 12 for Bobby 'and Davis has fumbled only five passes from his team mates compared with 10 for Pollan In assists the vital department where passes are made to team mates who score the two guards are about even with Johnny holding a 28 26 edge So overall the two court dandies are just about a tossUp Pollan is more deadly as a shooter while Johnny stacks up better as a playmaker Together they
